June 20, 2003 — The LA Times tells the story of how Jerry Bruckheimer retooled the "too bland, too tame" script for "Pirates of the Carribbean", promising not to give the studio an R rating, but nevertheless hitting a milestone with the finished result: the first PG-13 rating for Disney Pictures (for Action/Adventure Violence).
Bruckheimer brought onboard the acclaimed screenwriters of Shrek, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, who gave the pirates a unique twist by making them cursed -- and by cranking up the violence . According to the article, throats are slit. Eek.
Though it was a rough ride getting approval from Disney for all the carnage, it happened all the same.
