April 5, 2006 — Universal will allow users to download King Kong to their home computers in the UK starting April 10th. Users will own the movie after downloading it, instead of renting it. It uses the latest DRM software from Microsoft, which means the copies will not play on hit iPods.
Universal Pictures in the U.K. will offer King Kong, Pride & Prejudice and other films on a download-to-own basis in the DVD window beginning April 10.
Universal has partnered with U.K. Internet DVD rental service Lovefilm to make digital copies available to consumers the same day the movies are released on DVD. For $19.99 ($34.66), consumers will get two permanent digital copies (one for their computer and one for a portable device) and a DVD by mail of a Universal film.
Universal will initially make 35 films available on a download-to-own basis. Users will not be allowed to make copies of their digital downloads or burn the movies to DVD. The service will use Microsoft's digital rights management technology. Digital copies will be playable on PCs but will not play on Apple computers and iPods...
