Okay, there is WAY TOO MUCH INCORRECT INFORMATION HERE!
I'll do this in order:
Van Helsing had a planned sequel; it was never part of a trilogy. When they do the sequel (which they still plan on doing) it will probably be the last unless they get someone to pick up the spin-off show 'Translyvania'.
So, to end the focus of the topic, the 'insider' was incorrect... on a number of things.
There is no "Curse of the Mummy". That is a joke people on the tram tour tell guest to Universal's theme park, how do I know? I work on 'Revenge of the Mummy' at Universal Studios Hollywood. At the opening of the ride Brendan Fraiser was asked about the status of a possible sequel and he said Universal is asking Sommers for one (with their new ride it seems like perfect marketing) however he's still uncertain he wants to resurrect a franchise that he ended in "Returns". He told Fraiser that he'd take the summer to think it through.
Summers over. No word. He's too busy doing Flash Gordon to think about it so the answer is still no. However, he already has a treatment for Van Helsing sequel and now that Van Helsing has made $300 MILLION DOLLARS (making back it's money plus 100 mill) a sequel is guarnteed. I don't know if any of you looked at your local Best Buys today but at mine they had sold out of the Ultimate Edition and sold over half their inventory of the standard editions (which was even a surprise to me). I bought my Ultimate Edition at Universal but was hoping to get the exclusive bonus disk at Best Buy when I bought the 'standard' edition. However, I was forced to buy it online. The reason I mention it's clear success on DVD... all that money goes to Universal which means the film will make over 100 million dollars in profit. If it makes 100 million on DVDs alone (which it can thanks to the Ultimate Edition which retails at 55 bucks - even if you pay less the retail stores pay full) then it made the amount the film was made for plus that amount in profit alone. It can very well happen thanks to marketing.
Also, the set of Translyvania did cost a lot (however, of the 200 mill the film cost I'm sure the special effects were what really raised the meter) but only costed more when Universal kept it up in hopes to have a hit NBC series. However, they never considered how much it really would cost and decided to sell the area and show to the highest bidder. I don't know what happened with that as I only heard others were 'intrested'.
As far as 'signed on'. Hugh was signed to do another flick but if Universal wanted they can chnage it so he does another flick for them and that deal means squat. I think he'd do it again in a heart beat, though. He seems really pleased with the end results and so am I.
Expect Van Helsing 2 to be in production at earliest late 2005 and at latest 2007. Hugh and Stephen are both attached to do other things and no matter how popular a film it normally takes about 2 years for the sequel to get off ground if they want it done right. |
