November 8, 2002 — The Cleveland Banner reports:
Best-selling author William B. Breuer has written 35 acclaimed books about espionage, cloak-and-dagger operations and wartime deceptions over the past 20 years. But for the last year and a half, he's been involved in a secret operation of his own -- from his home here in Cleveland.
Breuer's book, "The Great Raid on Cabanatuan: Rescuing the Doomed Ghosts of Bataan and Corregidor," is being made into a major motion picture by Miramax Films called "The Great Raid." The film is due to be released in early spring of 2003, starring Benjamin Bratt, James Franco and Joseph Fiennes.
Breuer announced the honor to more than 30 guests at a reception at his home Friday evening.
"My wife, Vivien -- who passed away some 10 months ago -- and I talked about having an affair like this when it finally took place," Breuer said of his book being made into a movie. "... And I know she's here with us in spirit."
When he wrote the book in 1995, Breuer said it was "the most fascinating story (he) was ever aware of, with regard to warfare."
In 2001, he got a call from his agent in New York City, Albert Zuckerman, saying Miramax was interested in making a movie based on his book.
