October 14, 2003 — It used to be that a Grisham-based movie was money in the bank (Exhibit A: The Firm), but now, with the impending release of Runaway Jury, the jury is still out on whether it will be a success at the box office, according to USA Today.
There's more to a hit movie than a best-selling book.
"You can't get a hit out of a best seller only tapping into the people who read the book," says Leonard Klady, senior writer at moviecitynews.com. "You have to hope that the subject matter and the cast and the word of mouth translates into something more."
Can Runaway Jury halt Grisham's box office slide?
It "doesn't look like it will be as big as the prime Grisham pictures," says Gray. "But it could very well be a mini-comeback. It's slick, and has a great cast and a solid director in Gary Fleder, who directed the hits Kiss the Girls and Don't Say a Word."
Still, says Klady, "It's a pedigree cast, but it's not a money cast."
