March 26, 2003 — Jack Mathews, a columnist for the New York Daily News, posted a followup to his past articles where he lamented the lack of screens and publicity Disney had been giving Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. Now with the film's Oscar win for Best Animated Feature and rerelease on over 800 screens, he has something to jump for joy over.
Near the end of his article, he brings up an interesting point that has been on many people's minds. With it's upcoming March 28 rerelease, Disney has basically given the film about 2 weeks until the April 15 (proposed) release date for the 2-Disc DVD set. However, Mathews reports that Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook has said that if the theatre showings go over well, Spirited Away could see it's DVD release on April 15 postponed.
It certainly would be a blow to those in anticipation of the DVD, but all in all, the chance to have some extra time to show people this film on a big screen would definitely make the DVD postponement worth it. |
