March 16, 2003 — The webpage IGN.com has published the first DVD review of the Hayao Miyazaki film 'Spirited Away.' The reviewer notes that while the disc has minor DVd compression issues, the most incredible surprise about the main transfer of the film is that like the prints screened during this past fall, the DVD does not have red tint problems that plgued Region 2 'Spirited Away' DVDs (the red tint issue in Japan sparked a lawsuit there).
The IGN reviewer also notes that the color seems BETTER than the DLP viewing he saw during it's initial September run (having seen a DLP print myself, I'm also ecstatic to see the transfer).
The DVD also boasts a full set of the previews that were used in Japan (run together, they make up a half-hour of previews!), as well as a 40-minute segment on the creation of the film. There is even a sectionwhere you can see the first 10 minutes of the film in storyboard format, and swtich between them and the final film image using the DVD 'angle' buttons (my Region 2 DVD has the entire film in storyboard format on the second DVD, which is kind of a shame for the Region 1 DVD special edition, but there are still plenty of goodies to discover). |
