Spirited Away finds a UK distributor; Studio Ghibli to release 6 DVDs this Fall

SUBMITTED BY uruseiranma

March 1, 2003Spirited Away finds a new United Kingdom Distributor

With premieres already in Germany and France, and Spain not far behind, some have been wondering when Hayao Miyazaki's latest film will finally show up in the United Kingdom. According to recent reports, the rights for distribution have been awarded to Optimum Releasing, a distribution company. So far, a definite date has not been set, but if the next information is anything like a hint, we can probably expect a premiere this fall in the United Kingdom.

Studio Ghibli to release 6 DVDs to the United Kingdom this fall

This Spring, the United States sees 3 of Hayao Miyazaki's films appear on DVD, but this fall in the UK, 6 discs from Miyazaki's production company Studio Ghibli will premiere on DVD over a period of 2 months:

Premiering on August 18, 2003

Castle in the Sky

Miyazaki's first directorial feature under the Studio Ghibli label, this 1985 fantasy picture tells the story of a young boy named Pazu. Along with a young girl named Sheeta, they fight their way past corrupt government officials, plundering air pirates, all in an attempt to find the legendary 'Castle in the Sky.'

Pom Poko

Directed by veteran Ghibli director Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies), this 1994 feature tells the plight of a tribe of Tanuki (raccoon-like creatures) who try to stop a human construction project from encroaching on their habitat.

Kiki's Delivery Service

This 1989 film tells the story of Kiki, a young witch who leaves home at the age of 13, to learn to become independent and practice a trade. In a small seaside town, she sets up a delivery service and makes new friends along with her cat Jiji.

Premiering on September 22, 2003

Porco Rosso

This 1992 film was directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and is considered one of his best works. The story chronicles a pilot during the early years before World War II, who somewhat resembles a pig.

Whisper of the Heart

Meant to be the film premiere of Miyazaki's successor (Yoshifumi Kondou, who passed away shortly after it was completed), Whisper of the Heart follows the trials and tribulations of a young girl trying to find herself before her high school year comes to an end.

Only Yesterday

A story about a young business woman who takes a vacation back to her home. While there, she remembers the past in several various flashbacks, and considers the direction her future will take.
