February 2, 2003 — On February 1st, 2003, the 2002 awards were handed out for the Annie Awards. what are the Annie Awards, you ask? It is an award ceremony by The International Film Society to commend some of the best animation in TV, shorts, and feature film. This past Saturday, Hayao Miyazaki's film 'Spirited Away' was nominated for 4 Annie Awards, and took home all 4! 'Spirited Away's' accomplishments are as follows:
Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Theatrical Feature-Spirited Away
Directing in an Animated Feature Production-Hayao Miyazaki
Writing in an Animated Feature Production-Hayao Miyazaki
Music in an Animated Feature Production-Joe Hisaishi
'Spirited Away' tied for the most wins of the night, with Dreamworks' 'Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron' (which won for Effects Animation, Character Design, Production Design & Storyboarding in an Animated Feature).
Even Chihiro's English-speaking voice Daveigh Chase won in the category 'Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production,' for her role as Lilo in 'Lilo & Stitch.'
PIXAR took home one Annie for character animation, which was awarded to Doug Sweetland.
And for the category 'Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Short Subject,' the Master of Stop Motion Animation Ray Harryhausen won for his short subject 'The tortoise and the Hare.'
