As the LEad Editor on this board, let me just put it this way: if I didn't know and believe in how good it was, I wouldn't have pestered the head of countingdown.com to give this site a major overhaul. It takes an exceptional film for me to go all out and try to get people like mad to see it.
This is anime, but not the typical anime one usually thinks of: this actually has the semblance of an incredible story that is both arthouse and not, something that can appeal to everyone. I have sat in the theater 3 times through this, and the kids do not fidget, whine or cry: this is truly amazing!
I am hoping the film will make it's way to a rerelease. I am all for one, and if it does, I will be sure and let all the countdown people know. right now, Spirited Away is being nominated and considered all over the world for certain awards. It won one just recently, and I'm sure it'll have a good chance at the animation awards (the Annie Awards as it is called). |

It was good, but I don't think it was THAT good. nn; I found myself wondering when it'd be over sometimes... if I might say so without being killed for blasphemy, I thought it was just a bit too long. Chihiro/Sen got whiny after awhile, though I liked the character development in her... the stereotype of white people as pigs like Chihiro's parents was just a tad bit iffy to me... and I don't know, it was just TOO weird for me. The backgrounds were great and the animation was great, and I loved the character Haku, but otherwise it was kind of like... eh to me. It didn't stand out as one of my favorite animated films, though it was a pretty incredible animated movie, with an original story.. but I didn't feel particularly connected to the characters, and there wasn't enough humor or anything particularly engaging that locked my interest... it was a bit bland at times. My favorite part was probably the ending, when Haku remembers who he is.. and it's really depressing, 'cause Chihiro's too young to realize how great they are together, or that she'll never see him again, physically... Haku was a bit of an odd character, though I liked him... I had the hardest time figuring out of he was bad or good. Rambling now. I guess it just didn't strike a cord with me, and I've tried to write this in as unbiased a way as possible... 'cause my favorite animated film I've seen so far this year has been Treasure Planet.. it had the deep colorful characters, great animation, and wonderful story all combined, and was just the right length, if not too short... the other animated films I've seen this year have been Spirit and Lilo & Stitch, which were both very good, but lacked their own bits somewhere appropriately... I've seen Princess Mononoke too... I was scared to watch it, and scared to watch it again. That was WAY too bizarre to appreciate, though the animation in that too was pretty neat.
Overall I think Spirited Away would be a very good contender for the Oscar if not most certainly win it, just because so many critics have hailed it an A+ in their biased Disney-can-rot views, and it wasn't really widely shown so it can't be disproved by people, just accepted... =\ It's really a shame if it wins over Treasure Planet to me, 'cause it's really such an unfair competition.
But you know, to each her own. |
