One thing reviews have given the movie a hard time about is the chemistry between Michael and Selene. Every time I just wanna scream: What's wrong with it?!
Think back. When the two first meet is there any doubt in anyone's mind that its love at first sight? Have people become so cynical that this has become an alien concept?
And for those who says there is too little time set aside for the romance I just gotta say: From what I got out of the movie, these are not two people looking for a relationship. One doesn't seem to have recovered from the loss of his wife judging by his social life and the other is so caught up in revenge a new emotion like love hits her like a freight train.
And one more thing. They're busy! Do people expect them to put the moves on eachother with all the stuff going on? THAT would have been unrealistic to my mind.

i completely agree with you.
this was actually a cool way to supress their love. i wouldnt even call it love in the first place.

as you said, when they really meet the first time in his apartement she is quite rude. i dont think that getting pushed high to the wall hearing an angry voice why anyone you dont know was after you, which you also didnt know, is selenes way for saying i like you.

also, even after he saved her life she just introduces her to him by telling her name and right after that she again asks him about the lycans.

so you see at first he was just an object, a human, to her and she was only curious why the lycans wanted him so much.

come on, this is way better than the romance in pearl harbor or so.

they hardly kissed each other and in the end you see them walking away showing no sign of love.

kinda perfectly done in my eyes

I completely agree. But just to clear things up, the "first time" I was referring to was when they first see eachother in the subway. He slows down taking her in, she practically gasps for air. OK, I'm exaggerating but if that doesn't get people thinking these two care for eachother, what is the first thing Michael says when he is captured? He needs to get back to see if Selene is OK. And when you think about it, does Selene really need to keep Michael alive to find out why the lycans want him? She even says she should kill him herself to his face.

There was actually supposed to be [SPOILER] two kisses. They cut the one shown in the trailers ,right after she frees him in the lycan den [/SPOILER]. I'm guessing they wanted to sort of save the big "revelation of their true emotions" for the sequel. I was annoyed by this at first but now I kind of get it. Why they cut Michael's backstory of losing his wife in a carcrash however I will never understand.

i know what you mean by the first time. of course the literally first time is when they get eye contact in the subway station.

but for me this is no meeting for the first time
thats why i said *really* meet the first time ...

of course, for the movie they made it that way to show michael plays an important role though noone in the audience has any idea which.

firstly of course it would screw up the entire more, but if she would have killed him, how is she to find out?

interrogate a lycan ? of course that could be a way but i doubt one would say anything bout such an important subject when he knows he will die, no matter what he says.

yeah i know about the second kiss and im actually glad they took it out. tells much about how wiseman wants the relationship to be seen, i like that.

btw what is that soiler thing, i hate highlighting it with the mouse just to be able to read it. if anyone reads something he didnt want to read then hes completely wrong here.

and i think its true what you say. they wanna build up their relationship in the sequel, im quite sure about that.

as to the carcrsh :
souldnt that be in spoilers too?

well, ill start reading the book right after i finished 2 books i must read before that, cuz i already started with the first of the trilogy ... was bad luck i ordered the book right a few days after starting it.

btw if you liked the lord of the rings in any way, check out Dennis L.McKiernan.
in my eyes his style is superior to tolkiens (!!!) and he built up his own world you can compare to mithgar. and every single novel he wrote plays in that world, just in a different time, but all are connected ...

do you have any information on when the book to the sequel will come out?

OK, it seems to be named "Blood Enemy" according to Amazon .
No release date. Hmm... according to this place it's Dec 1 2004. Wait, over here it says Blackwell's it's a prequel. OK, I'm confused.

so, well, to the point in the first place: selene could have killed michael and then interrogate a lycan for what they needed him. so, for the sake of the movie he talks and then .............. erm .......

btw, what is that counter saying 53 days have gone since the dvd release of underworld .... ? (at that date it came out in the theatres here, grr)

so for the sake of the movie it wouldnt make sense to kill michael.

so, aaah, whatever. singe was a *****, a bit of pain and he talks like a waterfall ....



lol *buy it now* . how the hell do you buy a book that hasnt even been written ???

See now you're thinking at it backwards. It makes perfect sense for Selene who hates lycans more than anything else to kill him when he's been turned into one. In fact, that the lycans want him specifically should actually be more of a reason to do it, not less. My point, and the whole point of the movie, is that she doesn't BECAUSE she is falling in love with the guy.

yeh, i was thinking at it backwards to get a different point of view.

now coming to a conclusion, of course it makes perfect sense for the reasons you pointed out.

but, as said before, it wouldnt be the underworld movie were talking about right now if she had just killed him.

so for the movie itself its more than reasonable that michael stays alive.

having that settled i dont agree with you that she didnt kill him because she was already falling in love with him.

i think the whole love thing is based on the fact that michael has to stay alive and so coherently it makes you think selene doenst kill him cuz she loves him.

this way i absolutely do not agree with your point:

just reading this makes you think underworld is about a love story ...

i wouldnt even forcely say theres love between them at the end of the movie.

so im convinced, as i see it as a great move from wiseman, that oyu only think they are in love.
like, the first kiss was only to get the handcuffs on michael. surely she was taking a deep breath afterwards, but this one was just for the audience.

i think they will do all this stuff in the sequel. so it doesnt matter if you think they already are in love or they will fall in love soon.

OK, so basically you don't think Selene's actions are motivated by her feelings for Michael but because the storyline dictates he has to stay alive. Fair enough.
But you're right, I should have said "and a big chunk of the storyline, is that she doesn't because she is attracted to the guy." Love is a bit of a strong word.
I do think that at the beginning of the sequel the two will not be a perfect loving couple because, as I've said before, they are not the most "balanced" of people (for lack of a better term) and are too busy surviving.
But nobody can convince me that the two are not attracted to eachother.

arent there any people here to talk to ?
i mean, were having like a 4 eye conversation all the time throughout many threads only being disturbed sometimes by one or two lonely souls (as if bringing in some coffee or beer)

It's hard to say. It goes up and down all the time, sometimes there's many, sometimes just a few. It was pretty quiet a while before the DVD came out then people swarmed in again. I guess that's dying down now too.

At this point the third one is planned to be a prequel, probably the Lucian and Sonja story (I've heard a rumor the two MIGHT also be played by Speedman and Beckinsale). Of course plans change. Personally I'd want the prequel now (with Michael Sheen) then two sequels about Selene and Michael. Has anyone got Santa Claus' e-mail?

hey.. i was just reading this post.. and you guys have good arguments...

I can't decide myself if the first kiss (well the only one in the movie) was just to get him into the handcuff or not... when ya think about it... she could have easily got him into that handcuff without kissing him.. she waaayy stronger than him.. could have just used a little force.. wouldn't even had to use all that much with how weak he was at that point...

but then.. maybe she did thinking it was the easiest/quickest way to get it on him.. but if so.. that would mean that when she left and did the whole catching her breath thing.. it was then she realized that that kiss felt/meant more that she thought it was going to and she was just realizing that... besides prolly thinking .. HELLO Selene! what are u getting yourself into with him...

and i think in the car ride there... when she was telling him that the only reason she was curious was to find out why lucien wanted him... she was trying to convince herself of that more than him...

to me its obvious that she saved him b/c she knew there was some feeling there.. enough to where she didn't want him dead... and in the final fight?? she trampled three of her own death dealers to try to save him!!

Any thoughts??
