When I made plans to go see "Big Fish" on Thursday, December 11th, I was extremely excited. Tim Burton is the best (and my favorite) director of all-time and when I found out he was making another movie I was excited before I knew anything about it. I have kept the DVD with the Big Fish" trailer on it that was sent in the Los Angeles times and I watched it everyday up until I saw the movie. When my family drove to Century City to see it at the AMC I was bursting with joy and when we bought the tickets and stepped into the theater we had no idea what we were in for:
We took our seats, which weren't too bad because nobody sat infront of me. The theater was completely empty except for about 10 other people besides us and I was very dissapointed because I had expected it to be jam-packed full. As the trailers played my excitement built and when they finally ended I was making weird squeaking noises.
The movie was a perfect example of amazing filmmaking. The acting burst through the ceiling of my hopes with incredibly talented performances by Albert Finney, Ewan MacGregor, Billy Crudup, Alison Lohman, Marion Cottilard, Steve Buscemi, Matthew McGrory, Jessica Lange, Helena Bonham Carter, and Danny DeVito. I sat in my seat watching the story of how Young Edward Bloom and Young Sandra Templeton feel in love, how he was in the army, how he met a giant, how he came across a little perfect town called Spectre, how he crossed paths with a witch, how he met Vietnamese siamese twins, how he lost his wedding ring to a big fish (hence the title), and many other wonderful stories.
The overall wonder and magic of the film is a superb presentation of Tim Burton's un-equaled genius. When I left the theater I was speechless and as my family discussed the movie over dinner I sat replaying the film in my head. The one picture kept coming back to me: when Young Edward and Young Sandra are laying together in the field of daffodils that Edward planted all for her.
I plead to the Academy to give this film what it deserves and award it the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars.
If there is one film that you see this holiday season and you expect to be astonished, amazed, and ecstatic when you walk out of the theater there is only one movie that will fit that description: "Big Fish".
