Spider-Man 2 Helps Sony Reach $1 Billion

SUBMITTED BY Scooby

September 23, 2004Reuters reports that Sony Pictures is on track to earn $1 billion in the annual domestic box office gross. That would be a third consecutive year for the company, and it has Spider-Man 2 to thank for that:

The studio's "Spider-Man 2" contributed a hefty $371.2 million to the company's total, while the Adam Sandler starrer "50 First Dates" was the only other release to gross more than $100 million for the distributor, with $120.8 million. The two films generated $492 million between them, nearly half of Sony's year-to-date total.

The company's North American boxoffice in 2004 is poised to surpass $1 billion in gross revenue by the end of the upcoming weekend, helped by the debut of the supernatural thriller "The Forgotten," starring Julianne Moore.

Heading into the weekend, the box-office cume for the studio will be around $993 million, with "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" and "Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid" still residing in the top 12 as of last weekend. Both "Resident Evil" and "Anacondas" are from Sony's specialty label Screen Gems.
