Well, the book starts out at the part with Achilles and Agammemnon fighting over Briseis. But the movie has the whole intro-like thing that told how the war started.

The whole Trojan horse idea is left out of the book for the Odyssey and it stops at Hector's funeral. When the movie ends with them destroying Troy.

Patroclus is actually Achilles's gay lover in the book when in the movie he is his cousin.

That's about all I can think of at the moment.

Pffft Give me Iliad over this any day. Action to romance ratio is where it should be in the poem...The movie? Bah..It's also probably the most inaccurate movie, as in varying away from teh actual story, since Starship Troopers...and that's saying a lot.

Claire has some good ones there. However, I think the most GLARING difference is the non-physical existence of the Gods who play a very vital role in the epic poem.

Also, Menelaus doesn't die...I REPEAT, DOES NOT DIE! (sorry, that totally ticked me off) He duels Paris while the armies watch on. Paris is very near death and Aphrodite saves him. Menelaus then cites that their verbal agreement has been breeched, battle ensues.

Achilleus does nto ride to the walls of Troy and begin screaming "Hektor". While he's still in his rage he chases the Trojans, who are terrified becuase Achilleus is going whacko, back to the city. Hektor stays outside though, determined to battle Achilleus and keep his honor. However, when it's just him and Achilleus, he lets his wits get the best of him and he flees around the city walls thrice with Achilleus hot on his heels the entire time. Finally, Hektor stops running and turns to face Achilleus. Then the duel begins. Afterwards, though, when Achilleus drags him around, Hektor's body doesn't decay or get torn up. The Gods protect it until he is returned to Priam.

Hmmm, I think the big diffs have been covered now. There's a lot of small ones too...

It's Bruce!

I think Vanya did a pretty good job of
covering this in another thread: but
basically this film took major liberties
with the epic poem. I'm aware of the
following:

1. Achilles - He is an ace in the hole
for the Greeks, but Agammemnon
ticks him off when he confiscates Briseis,
who is Achilles' prize of war. This
relationship is important, but not as
much as you'd guess from the film.
Achilles snaps into action and kills
Hector when Patroclus is killed by
Hector. He does not do it for Briseis,
as shown in the film.

2. Paris - In the poem, he dispatches
Achilles with the help of Apollo, and is
killed in turn; by whom, I don't recall.
The film allows Paris to survive.

3. Trojan Horse - This is Odysseus'
strategy, and it occurs after Achilles is
dead, in the Iliad.

I was generally disappointed in the film
because it was just a glitzy costume drama and star vehicle for its big name
cast; especially Pitt and Bloom.

Agamemnon doesn't die in the book either. He does home w/ Cassandra only to be killed by his wife when he gets there.

Anywhere, I guess. There a TON of different translations though.
