the beginning starts out too fast and kind of blah. john williams killed the music. music really just sucked (well, most of it). the dramatic lines they show on tv for trailers are in a places that makes them lose their power. but, what the real tragedy is is what this movie could have been. it had all the elements to be a "lord of the rings" quality epic but, failed to live up to or fullfil that.(mostly becasue of the script) all in all it is a good movie and worth seeing, but it had the potential to much greater.

not John Williams! As a huge John Williams fan I can't let that one slide. I didn't think the music fitted the film at all I was dissapointed with it. But didn't they change it at really short notice or something. I know there was some issue surronding it, and you could tell. Was it James Horner who did it in the end?

I actually loved the music. They just played it a little too much. I think my favorite part with the music was when they were showing all of Troy for the first time.

I loved the music, but not the way it was used in the movie. As for the rejected score, I've heard a great deal of it, and it was just even louder than Horner's. It was a little too... obvious for my tastes. There are one or two great tracks; however, the equivalents on Horner's score to those tracks, I love also (especially the Greek ships approaching Troy. Both composers did amazing jobs for that part). All in all, as much as I don't think Horner's score fit the film, I think Yared's score would have fit even less. And yes, there is a VERY annoying wailing woman on Yared's score, too. While his score wasn't bad, I must say, I'm glad they opted for Horner's. Oh, and if you wanna listen to Yared's score, it's at his Official Site .

Cos, the only similarities Gladiator and Troy share are they are both epics set thousands of years ago, they are not both nearly the same movie.

Gladiator and Troy were VERY different movies. The setting was similar, but not the same, and the stories were totally different. And of course both movies are about warriors. Warrior is a pretty broad term. The themes, the story, the characters, the setting, the quality of those movies: all different. That's sort of like the LotR/HP comparisons--totally unfounded. Or as Joey on Friends would say: It's a Moo point.

Cosmo... Gladiator and Troy are totally different. Gladiator is about one guy. Troy is about many many characters and an entire war. I think everyone would agree with me on this.

Definitely. And I don't believe Wolfgang approached this film in a similar way to Ridley's approach on Gladiator at all. Both films have a very different look, for one thing. The cinematography in Gladiator was more stylized and expressive (and I LOVE that!). Ridley approached Gladiator as a very intimate story. While yes, it did effect the entire Roman empire, the story was about one man's journey to finding peace. Wolfgang approached Troy as a very massive movie, wide in scope. Sure, there were central characters, but as PyroGurl said, there was no single character it centered around. Troy was about BIG armies fighting in BIG CGI battles, in a very BIG war. There was only one big battle, and even that battle was handled very intimately. We didn't see any huge army of thousands of CGI soldiers running into each other. Yes, we see the flying arrows and armies approaching, but when the real battle ensues, Scott focuses on the individuals, and real people , and the hero of the story. That battle is completely about establishing Maximus as a general, and the power he held. The battle, even though it was big, was still all about Maximus. Ridley approached Gladiator as a much more personal movie than Wolfgang approached Troy, yet it is just as much an epic.

Am I understanding you correctly to say that you think there isn't a shred of truth in the film 'the passion'
Ok, I can tolerate you criticising the factual evidence surronding Troy, but otherwise you are just claiming to disprove the whole of the Christianity belief system!
Fine if you don't beleive it, but you can't make statements like that as if they are facts!

No, I think it's from now on YOU better not attack anyone else, which you are yet again doing here.

You're wrong Cosmo, accept it. You're just making an ass of yourself and looking stupid because you're continuing this. (You should consider this in other "arguments" as well.)

The ONLY reason it's being compared to Gladiator is the existence of classic armor in both. That is the one and ONLY reason.

The Gladiator story happens CENTURIES after the Trojan war. Gladiator opens with an all-out war in a wooded area, Troy opens with a one-on-one fight in the desert. Gladiator has ONE central and heroic character, Troy has no one central character--it has several. Gladiator is not a constant war, there is only one short battle at the beginning, the rest is brutal man-to-man and man-to-beast fighting in an arena--Troy is warfare the entire movie. The central city in Gladiator has a republic political system, Troy was a monarchy. Gladiator was riddled with flashbacks and had a very idylic ending, not so with Troy.

I could continue but that's enough for now.

It's Bruce!

You can't compare this film with LOTR because Peter Jackson's vision was very
loyal to Tolkien's story. While he could
not give you every detail, he did give
you a script that did not deviate from
the storyline, and a remarkable rendition
of Middle Earth: it felt like a parallel universe, it was so three dimensional.

Troy works in two dimensions only. This
film does not succeed as an epic because
of the liberties it took with the actual Iliad
(something that Vanya has accurately
noted); in spite of its all-star cast. This
is a big, glossy Hollywood retelling of
Homer's myth.

well you can cant not compare this to lotr because of the vision...

lotr is 100% wripe off the books..
