Just start a list...I'll rant for like 15 minutes and then stop...for now...

1) Menelaus's death - WTF?! WTF?! WTF?! I actually did yell "What the hell?" in the theater...WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN...

2) Paris NOT dying and running away with Helen - *eye twitches* He was supposed to be taken down by an arrow right after he shot Achilleus (that was wrong too, but we'll get to that in sec ) and Menelaus is supposed to take Helen back after she exposes her breast to him to make him spare her life.

3) Briseis killing Agamemnon - WHOA! WTF?! No...He and Cassandra (Priam's daughter who could see the future and who was not in the movie ) are killed by Clytemnestra (Ag's actual wife) and Aegisthus (wife's new guy) when they return home...

4) Did anyone else notice that the battle happened in what, like a month max? Ummm...should be just over a decade!

5) Achilleus dying while saving Briseis: no, wrong...Supposed to die in battle...arghles...

6) Achilleus vs Hektor fight: Um, no huge battle beforehand where Achilleus slaughters tons of guys, no Hektor running way...

7) Where are Chriseis and Hekabe? Hmmm?

Not explaining Achillues's heal...

9) Paris living in his father's good graces before he returns with Helen - Um, yeah...He had a bad prophecy so they wanted him dead... duh...They only let him b/c Cassandra says not to (no one believes her b/c of her curse)

10) Patroklos is Achilleus's male lover (very common actually) NOT his cousin, but can't have a "gay" Brad ya know...

11) The emphasis on the love story between Achilleus and Briseis - let's just not even go there

Agh...okay...that's enough for now...next?

It's Bruce!

lol...well it is based on a poem..lol..that could pull it in either direction

things that sound good im a book or poem might absolutly suck in a movie

Wrong, Cosmo. It was NOT all based on a poem...The Iliad ends with Priam returning with Hektor... The Trojan horse happens AFTER that... along with the death of Achilleus, Priam, and Paris... That reminds me...

12) Ajax's death - Heh, when he doesn't win Achilleus's armor after Achilleus dies, he goes crazy, kills a herd of cattle, and then kills himself

the WAR lasts for a decade, the illiad for a year. even if the scene with hector vs achilles wasn't 100% accurate it sure was the best scene in the film and would be worth seeing 100 times over. but, I do agree with you on almost everything

The only problem I have with all those discrepancies is Paris's death! Seriously, did they keep him alive just to make audiences happy? b/c it didn't work!!!!! I think they wanted Paris to be a more sympathetic character than he actually was. Everyone I saw it with wanted him to die, and I was the only one who knew that he actually was supposed to. I wanted him to die so badly....

Considering half the accounts of the war involve the Greek Gods and all accounts were written at least 100 years after the war, I find it silly to stand there and tell anyone what is or is not accurate since we have no idea.

But the movie was fun. And isn't that what a movie should be?
Silly me.

mate, we're not even sure the war happened ! The ruins Schlieman found are considered to be Troy's, but we're not sure of it. And if it really is Troy, then it was a small town, and the battle was small as well...
And who cares if the Homer's text is right ? It's supposed to be based on his text, not on the truth !

and i think the movie was funny . I laughed a lot, but it wasn't supposed to be laughable, right ? silly me.

because they chose looks ahead of authenticity. the guys are walking around in steel and metal-armors even tho at that time only a few of the heroes wore that costly stuff. mostly all wore leather or bronze.

OMG Vanya I know EXACLTY what you mean. the thing that bothered me the most though was probably Paris' not-death. HOW COULD THEY NOT KILL HIM?! gah. thats like, my favorite part of the story. when paris didnt die i hink i started laughing. oh well. and when menelaus did die...wow that was a shocker.

but, it was all made up for because of brad's hottness...mmmmm....okay, well maybe i still cant forgive them. they butchered the story.

i have another one for the list:
13. (i think, or 14) Andromanche in the book is taken into slavery along with many other Trojan women (isn't she?) And Hector's son is thrown off the walls of Troy. yeah, it is kinda okay that they took that part out. its too sad.

Heh, me too. It was *not* accurate, but I thought it was a good movie. They wouldn't have needed professors to know if they were right or not, because it's written in a classic piece of literature. They knew they were innacurate, but they changed it to be more Hollywood.

Notice how at the end it says "Inspired by Homer's The Iliad" instead of based on. They used it for a reason.

THANK YOU!!! [frustrated sigh]

yes Paris should have died. I was prepared when i went into see the movie that it would be different from the Illiad. I knew some people would die, and others that do in the poem may not in the movie. But seriously Paris was like the one most likely to actually die. He has that whole speech to Helen about how they will be together in this world or the next. What the hell is the point in that if he is just going to survive to run away with her at the end. Besides if Paris escapes Troy, then that totally messes up the whole Aeneas having the sword of Troy to carry it onto Rome. Why would Paris give him the sword if he is just going to survive.
BTW, I saw this movie last night and me and my friend stayed up all night talking about it, so i am sorry if this post makes no sense i am rather tired!

Oh come on!!! it was obvious from the start that this movie was going to be one of those reality driven things. No gods, no magic, no imortallity, none of that. It was meant to be a sort of in reality thing even if the real events are a mystery. It's not as if this movie is the first to do such a thing. I loved it even though i was saying "why isnt this happening now" every now and again.

well, apart all the changes, and i'm not simply mean, i found the movie not really good. It wasn't really bad, but it could have been so much better with a different music, some interesting camera moves, and some more rythm. Even the dialogs weren't really good.
You know, at some parts it bored me enough to think about what i was going to eat after the movie, and then realise what i was doing !

No, wrong again, Cosmo. Yes, there maybe slight variations, BUT when and how the deaths of Paris, Achilleus, Hektor, Agamemnon, etc come about are the same across the board. Also again, if you're going to try to argue classical myth then it would help if you actually knew about or researched the subject in the first place. Actually, that piece of advise could do you well in other areas too.

Agh...okay...that's enough for now...next?

all that stuff was a little, "different" but it was still a good movie.

different..yeah

well with this...like alot of old storys..there are 20 acounts of each event...

so you might know of a different one then the director

No, wrong again, Cosmo. Yes, there maybe slight variations, BUT when and how the deaths of Paris, Achilleus, Hektor, Agamemnon, etc come about are the same across the board. Also again, if you're going to try to argue classical myth then it would help if you actually knew about or researched the subject in the first place. Actually, that piece of advise could do you well in other areas too.

the only think that have proven is that there was a city...and there was a battle...but i think that the whole helen and paris stuff is made up

"the greated love story ever told"

you forgot to add on your list the Homer's texts. They do exist. They're maybe telling tons of lies, but they do exist. The myth is written very clearly, no doubts at all. the movie is said to be based on Homer's text, nothing else. I imagine you know Homer lived Before Christ....

It's based on a book, like the 3 lotr, like Harry Potter, and a lot of other movies. Kill Bill as well. And they respected the stories. But not for Troy, why ?

Yeah, this movie kinda bugged me. Not only did they change a lot of the character motivations, but they didn't even justify the changes by re-making "history" in an interesting way.

They made some big choices, and it just wasn't very satisfying to me. Seemed like a lot of empty characters.

The battle scenes were good, but I don't know about the Achilles romance thing, it seemed like they needed something to offset the fact that Achilles was a killing machine (with a soft spotfor babes, I guess)

Homer never did state Achilles was gay...Although it was common in those times and it is very plausible to think so, that is just the way people translated it.

THE BRIDE: It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it coming. When you grow up, if you still feel raw about it, I'll be waiting.

And with that apology, statement, and invitation, The Bride walks out the kitchen side door, leaving the little girl to her mourning.

Yeah I know my screen name sucks.

I know, I didn't say that. Like you said, it was very common. Brad was about the right age for Achilleus (maybe a little older than him, but close enough) but Patroklos was about 20 years too young...

It's Bruce!
