Well, that's a tricky question...It most likely happened between 1400-1100 BC and even that maybe give or take a few years...

This is why it's so hard to date, we don't know...

Nope, he's just one heck of an angry guy, lol. (Homer's Iliad is actually about his anger) Agamemnon and Menelaus are the top dogs in this one. He's a real kick butt solider and hero though.

is his character proven to have existed?

As of yet? No...

Hope that helped a little...Greek history is sooo tricky because a lot of it is myth.

Aww, you'll get your chance! Just wait until the movie comes out. This board will be flooded with so many questions like:

"Why is Brad so angry???"

"Why did
Paris
have to die?"

"Who's Homer?"

"Why was there a huge war for just one woman?"

that your head will hurt. Believe me, it will happen. I've experienced it elsewhere....

Heinrich Schliemann dicovered the ruins of Troy by using Homer's Illiad (the basis for the movie) as a guide.

Up to that point, people had believed that Homer's stories were just that - stories. However, at that time, history was orally passed down, and Schliemann's discovery proved that there was some truth in those "stories" - part myth, part true history. I think that Schliemann did prove that there had been a major war there, though. Whether or not it was over a hot chick will probably never be known.

This is true...*nods* However, when Schliemann found the spot where he believed the battle to be, he had his workers dig this HUGE trench which actually ended up destroying a lot of stuff that was burried. It is also believed that he very likely faked some of his discoveries. It is concluded that there was a big powerful city there that was destroyed and rebuilt several times, but Schliemann only found the center of it so there are still ongoing excavations. They know that there was one heck of a huge battle there but they're not entirely sure who fought, when it started, or how long it lasted and they have no idea why it took place or how the myth and history relate to it for sure.

please stop bumping you nearly bumped on me ! hehehe !

My teacher told us in class this year that schlieman was looking for Troy, so when he found some ruins he said it was Troy. I mean, he wanted so much to find Troy, and suddenly he finds something, then says it's Troy...
There're ruins, alright. But nothing says it's Troy. There were a lot of cities in the area. It's quite "uncomfortable" to assert "here is Troy". In History class you usually hear "so here is an interesting city, found buy Schlieman, andsaid to be Troy, but no evidences yet alas".

And, my teacher said the ruins were small after all. You know, in archeology there're different levels for different period of times. Well the level for the the war of Troy showed a small city, compared to the Homer's text. And not much weapons or stuff like that. My teacher said a city existed there, and a war maybe happened there, but nothing important enough to make such a deal in the Iliad.
If i remember well, Troy hasn't been built after the war according to the text, but there're levels above the "war level", so that means the city lived after the possible war.

anyway, the Iliad is based on real facts that's for sure.
But what Schlieman found, we're not sure what it is.

oh btw i'm at university, studying History. The teacher i was talking about, is teaching Ancient History (prehistory to 5th century AD), and he's archeologist.

The point of studying history is to take all the different interpretations, throw out the obvious tall tales, and keep what you think makes sense.

Besides, Homer was writing a story from one point of view. The winners write the histories. They can say anything they want, and later generations have only their view to go on.

Reality versus legendary is a tough thing to determine, but I was always wondering about some of the stories surrounding this war. (I'm not talking about the movie version at this point.)

For example. The whole Achilles heel legend.

I'm sure that if Achilles was wounded in the tendon like that, it would be remembered that was how they brought down somebody who was really good with a sword.

If he was only wounded when he got the wound, not surprising he would die later, considering the type of weapons they used at the time.

Although the later "Classical" Greeks had decent ideas about health and treating wounds, this story happened way before that time.

Ramlbing thoughts sorry
