October 14, 2003 — Colin Farrell, who has appeared in what seems like a million movies since getting discovered in "Tigerland", makes a cameo appearance in Veronica Guerin.
In the middle of her tense investigations of Dublin's drug underground, Cate Blanchett as the title journalist in Veronica Guerin, opening Friday, passes by a beer-swilling lad outside a tavern absorbed in a soccer match on TV.
Striking up a conversation, she impresses him with her sports knowledge and coaxes useful info out of him. He takes the opportunity to ask her out for a drink.
Don't let the spider web tattoo on his neck fool you. That is indeed Colin Farrell, doing what comes naturally as a favor for a pal, director Joel Schumacher.
"It's no secret that I think Colin is one of the finest young actors alive," says Schumacher of the star of his Tigerland and Phone Booth. "However, playing a drunk soccer hooligan is not the greatest stretch."
Though there was no age-appropriate role for Farrell, 27, in Guerin, Schumacher felt obligated to at least enlist the Irish actor for a cameo.
