July 9, 2003 — Cate Blanchett talked to the press about her new film Veronica Guerin in advance of its opening in Ireland. Blanchett plays crusading Irish journalist Veronica Guerin, who took on the city's burgeoning underworld and skirted libel laws by giving crime figures amusing monikers, only to pay with her life in a horrifying motorbike hit on a city highway.
For Blanchett, who has played a series of historical figures in the past including Elizabeth I, the challenge was to win approval from Guerin's contemporaries.
"I am aware of the comparative smallness of both Ireland and Australia," the Oscar-winning actress said.
"I felt an enormous responsibility while playing Veronica to her colleagues, friends and family."
