Movie Review:
My thoughts on this movie...
"Master and Commander: Far Side of the Toilet". A film about a gigantic ego contest, as it were, between two men and their big boats. Russell Crowe is in his element as a self-involved, hard-drinking captain driven by the need to see whose ship is the biggest and baddest---no matter which innocent gets killed in the process. It is holiday fare that is sure to warm the heart, where disturbing and unnecessary injuries and deaths abound. This is the "Pet Semetary" of sea stories. The story drifts (Is it a battle film? Is it 'Animal Planet'? What is the one old sailor constantly mumbling about? What's with the weird tangent where Russell's oggling the native girl?) The accents are sometimes unintelligible, and battle scenes are poorly blocked, jumbled and confusing. Above everything, Crowe's character makes such stupid, self-serving decisions you just can't like the guy. He ain't a hero; he's a control freak who has command of misfits and cannons. Visually wonderful, but that's about it.
