November 10, 2003 — Thick clouds masked a full moon, but the stars were out anyway on Broadway Pier last night as Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany joined 600 guests for the West Coast premiere of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World."
Covered in red carpet and bathed in klieg lights, the venerable Embarcadero pier was transformed into a huge outdoor theater. Providing a dramatic backdrop were the tall ships Star of India and HMS Rose, their sails billowing in bay breezes.
Hanging on the celebrities' every word were TV crews from San Diego to Taiwan.
"San Diego is a lovely city, a good place to do this," said Crowe, whose visage as Capt. Jack Aubrey adorns the cover of Time magazine this week and is featured in a score of spots on entertainment channels as the Oscar buzz begins.
Crowe said that on several weekends during the five months of shooting at 20th Century Fox's studio near Rosarito, he would treat crew members to a stay at the Hotel del Coronado and forays to SeaWorld to swim with dolphins. "It was a great way to build camaraderie," said the Australian actor.
