All:

It's always unfair to hold Hollywood to any kind of authenticity standard, but for writings as detailed as this, I've heard they are trying hard.

I'll be interested to see if:

1. Uniforms are not strictly uniform in construction

2. Recoiling cannon (the most common mistake)

3. Music and period dance

any others?

Great topic Ros. I can't think of anything, except that I shall be looking to see if the guys are wearing wigs, hair extensions or what. How authentic will the hair be?

Hmm.

Hair, yes, that will be interesting. Some of the best films are done in by bad wigs and beards.

Its the little details that add to whether you really buy into a film from the beginning.

OK, here's a pic from a site that has some clear shots of the crew of a longboat...

Kit will probably post the rest...but take a look:

Not bad, considering. No rotten teeth or ragged clothing, but they look good!

NO SCURVY?!? Every boats gotta have a little bit of vitamin C deficiency. I have been pretty pleased with the photos that have been released, but I am a little curious to see Bettany as Maturin, I haven't seen one picture of that yet.

Nope, me neither. I can't wait to see if they really make him as poorly dressed as the books describe him: In shabby coats, battered hats and dirty cravats.

not to mention blood stained from whatever specimen he had been disecting last. I wonder what part of the storyline this will be in, as the finances of both aubrey and maturin could be either very wealthy or dirt poor depending on what time it is. I know its named FSotW, but I think they used that just because they like the title better for a movie.

Most important authentic non-exploding solid iron cannon balls.

...unless a ball happens to strike the powder store, then there would be quite the explosion, as the canons and the balls in them get incredibly hot durinng a battle. Hot enough to set off powder at least.

Scurvy would be one nasty (And cool) thing to see portrayed in a movie. Old wounds reopened...

Non-exploding is quite correct, except that being iron,(of suspect quality in terms of purity) they did have a tendency to splinter on impact with other hard objects.

More interesting would be whether they can simulate the firing and sound (as well as the effect)of grapeshot. Might be too gory for the average audience however.

You know, I've been thinking about this...we fanatics notice these kinds of details, but let's face it, the bulk of moviegoers wouldn't know a nine-pounder from a carronade...I guess it wouldn't really matter...
but OK, for the sake of quality and standards we must insist on attention to detail.

I have to say I was impressed with the amount of detail and work that went into this film.

The New York Times was squabbling over the fact that they changed the American frigate raiding the whalers to a French one, but I think you had to make the change.

They made some other weird charges about how the Acheron managed to find the Surprise without radar and telepathy.

My answer is "blind luck", and a little bit of spying would help.

Overall, the changes were made to make the more more palpable to the huge US audience.

I may go see it again, it was that enjoyable.
