October 16, 2002 — Variety reports that the film is a co-production between rights owner Artisan Entertainment, which will distribute domestically, and Miramax Films, which will distribute overseas through Buena Vista Intl. Set in 1959 Cuba, the story follows a 17-year-old girl who moves with her family to Cuba. There, she defies her family's wishes when she falls in love with a slick young Cuban dancer, who liberates her and presumably teaches her some mambo maneuvers. The young woman should be cast shortly, and the film already has a Nov. 21, 2003, release date.
