September 26, 2004 — Audience members did not forget about Sony's The Forgotten, starring Julianne Moore, making the thriller #1 for the weekend with an estimated $22 million. The Katie Holmes romantic comedy The First Daughter, distributed by Fox, opened at #4 with a dismal $4 million, tying Sony's Resident Evil: Apocalypse.
The British romantic comedy/horror Shaun of the Dead opened at #8 with $3.3 million. The film was shown in only 607 theaters.
"We're just going to let it sit and percolate for another week then we're going to expand further," said Jack Foley, head of distribution for Focus Features, which released Shaun.
Last week's champ, Paramount's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow earned only $6.7 million, but that was good enough for a No. 2 finish.
Disney's Mr. 3000 was #3, scoring $5 million. Universal's Wimbledon served a #7 spot with $3.4 million.
