The Coming Soon! Box Office Report has been updated with the studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to stay tuned there for the final figures on Monday afternoon.
Columbia's The Forgotten dominated another slow September weekend at the box office, earning an impressive $22 million from 3,104 theaters. The $42 million-budgeted Julianne Moore thriller marks the 6th biggest opening for the month, just behind Resident Evil: Apocalypse which made $23 million two weekends ago.
Last week's champ, Paramount's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow dropped a hefty 56.8% in its second weekend with $6.7 million. The $70 million special effects actioner, starring Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie, has made a disappointing $25.6 million so far.
Touchstone's Mr. 3000 dipped 42.4% and dropped to third place with $5 million. The Bernie Mac comedy has collected $15.4 million
Both Fox's new romantic comedy First Daughter and Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Apocalypse earned an estimated $4 million this weekend, making the race for fourth place too close to call. The former, starring Katie Holmes, opened in 2,259 theaters, while the latter, budgeted at $45 million, has earned $43.4 million domestically and about $55.7 million worldwide in three weeks.
The other newcomer, horror comedy Shaun of the Dead, opened in just 607 theaters and collected $3.3 million.
Cool. I'm going to go see it today.
