| How excited (or not) I am to see this movie... |
|
I had to pick up my jaw from the floor as I walked out of the theater. I don't remember the last time that a movie has moved me like The Last Samurai did. Not even the "mighty" Lord of the Rings movies succeed in emotionally attaching me to it. But here, the plight and sheer cool factor of the samurai make you wanna pick up a bokken and start kicking ass.
Comparison to Braveheart, another masterpiece, is inevitable. But where Braveheart was mainly a hack 'n slash, LS succeeds in attaining that nigh-impossible balance between realism and style. The fight scenes are perfect; being a martial artist myself, I could recognize every move they performed and no wire fu or other wacky stuff could be seen. From Kendo to Aikido to Kyudo, to Judo and Jujutsu, all the major Japanese arts are here in fine fashion. Cruise is very convincing in his role but the show is stolen by Ken Watanabe who plays the badass samurai hero Katsumoto.
All in all, LS is defintely my pick for Movie of the Year and I don't expect Return of the King to usurp this rare gem of a movie. It's easily a contender for the Oscars and if it doesn't win any, then may God have mercy on our souls. |
