December 30, 2002 — It appears that the earlier report that stated all exterior shots would be done in New Zealand was not correct. Here's the scoop from Dark Horizons:
"In September the makers of "The Last Samurai" built an amazing exterior set over our "New York Street." It was of a Japanese "red-light" district (brothels and such), and all of the principle cast had scenes filmed there.
