Xenos said: Almost all my chracters where in books way before they ever got to the big screen.
Lara Croft- Video Game
Eric Draven- Comic book hero seeking vengance on those who killed him. Fun, but not original.
Blade- Comic book hero seeking vengance on those who killed his mother.
T-800- Movie
James West- TV show & wrong era! (Wild Wild West)
Frank Castle- Comic book hero seeking vengance on those who killed his family. Do I detect a trend?
I blame myself for this. I didn't think that including Harry Calahan or John Constantine would hurt the thread, but I was obviously wrong. It just opened the floodgates for people to throw any character they like into the mix, no matter how absurd.
Characters for the League should be unique and original in some regard.
James Bond- The first popular spy character who was a hero. Before Bond, spys were generally regarded with disdain, and were usually the villain of a story.
Jack Ryan- Analyst for the CIA, not a field agent. Accustomed to thinking through things, not actually doing them.
Charlie McGee- A young woman with Pyrokinesis. Never done before to my knowledge. (Carrie White would work equally well in the 'chick' spot of the group)
Lestat Lioncourt- Not really very original, but he's interesting, popular and modern.
Harry Calahan- The first time a police officer was portrayed as little more than a criminal with a badge. While he may seem cliche' by today's standards, Dirty Harry was cutting edge when he first appeared on the scene.
John Constantine- Student of the occult who, in a cunning move, sells his soul to half the demons in Hell. If he dies, it'll be civil war in Hell as they fight over his soul. The only way to maintain peace, let him live forever. While he may be a comic book character, he's still very original.
Alex Cross- An African-American criminal profiler from Washington D.C. from the novels of James Patterson. There have been two films, but the novels came first. Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. |

Okay Xenos, lighten up before your arteries harden. It's just a message board thread. Malcomb was a mathematician who specialized in chaos theory, or at least he was in the film. Nick Fury would work really well as the 'M' of such a story, since he often plays such a role in the comics. I've never heard of the rest of the characters you listed, but I'm curious.
As to comic book characters, I wasn't being difficult about their use. My own team had a comic book character in it. What I felt was lacking was originality and diversity in their characters. The Crow, Blade, and The Punisher are all variations on the same theme- Vengance. One of them might have been appropriate, just not all three. Members of the League are a diverse lot. Your second team seems to have captured this trait quite well. While I'm unfamiliar with the characters, but the brief description you provided would seem to indicate that they are all quite unique individuals. On a side note, at first glance David Carter sounds a lot like a character from the 80's TV show, The Powers of Mathew Star. He was also an alien decended from royalty living in America. Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. |
