| 'Alien vs. Predator' Preproduction Presentation Report |
SUBMITTED BY Typhon24
October 19, 2003 — Hey guys. Typhon24, with some quick information that you 'AvP' fans might find interesting. I recently attended the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention (as in I just walked back in the door), where they played a brief 5 minute preproduction presentation on Fox's upcoming 'Alien vs. Predator' flick. They mentioned that 'not a frame of film has been shot yet', but shooting starts next week in Prague. They also mentioned that this tape played at their con last month, so it's possible that you all know about this presentation already, but I hadn't heard much about it so far, so I figured no one would mind if I provided a quick recap of what was shown.
The whole piece was narrated by director Paul WS Anderson (Resident Evil). As far as the story, we are told that in the past, the Predators used the the Aliens for hunting purposes, as a right of passage for the young Predator to become men (er, for lack of a better term). We see one such battle play out in an Aztec temple. Supposedly, the Predators were seen as Gods to the Aztec people (some shades of 'Stargate', it would seem), who built them their temples for worshipping and battle purposes. They showed some storyboards of one Predator defeating an Alien, holding its severed head in victory, as well as some boards where three Predator are overrun by thousands of Aliens, and upon realizing that they have clearly lost the battle, they activate their self-destruct technology. This is why so many ancient civilizations have been wiped out; Predator hunting failures.
Flash forward to present day, where a group of scientists have found one of the ancient Predator temples under an Antarctic icecap. The story revolves around 5 "teenage" Predators who are set to undergo their right of passage with the Aliens at this newly discovered temple, with the humans caught in the middle. There was also some brief dicussion about the Predators testing out their new weapons technology. The video showed one example, a modified shuriken throwing star (apparently this weapon is 'in' again after 'Underworld'), which starts as a small handle with a trigger and expands into 6 elongated razor blades. This was actually pretty cool looking.
Anyways, that pretty much rounded out the presentation. They quickly flashed some shots edited together from the two respective franchises, and rounded it out with a tagline (which may or may not be the final one), "Whoever wins...we lose." All in all, hard to tell too much about the final product from the small amount shown. The story is a little weird, but it could potentially be pulled off if Anderson is up to the task. Anyway, make of that what you will. That's all from me for now! Later! |

Before I've voiced my distaste for the cliche changes in the story made by director/disaster Paul Anderson. Since then my distaste has turned to pure outrage. First was the announcement of the complete absence of the special effects artist that is responsible for both Alien and Predator, though I pretty much let this go after a day or so. But now this. Why, Anderson, do you tourment me so? Why is it that you have found the one way to destroy my all time favourite storyline and at the same time MAKE A MOCKERY OF MY AZTEC HERITAGE?!?!?!?!?!? Now, I may sound like I'm taking this as a personal blow, which is in part true. But I also speak on behalf of all people of Chicano/Azteca lineage, all true fans of Alien versus Predator and anyone who understands film in the slightest.
What disturbs me the most is that he obviously did this without the slightest insight into aztec culture. There are no ties between Aztec and Yautaja(Predator) culture AT ALL! Furthermore, the Azteca could not have been wiped out by a Predator's self-destruct because there are quite complete records of how the empire REALLY DID fall. The least he could have done was liken it to ancient Fuedel Japan's Samurai culture, the two being very akin. If he had done as such he could have actually had it make sense with the REAL story of the original AvP graphic novel.
If you haven't gotten the point, I'm EXTREMELY affended by this debotchery of my proud ancestory. I will be arranging a a petition to, at the very least, have that hack of a human being Paul Anderson thrown off the project.
And if you happen to read this Anderson, let me just say that you'd better hope we never meet in a dark alleyway. Or anywhere for that matter. Who is maX? Ha. You could never hope to know me. You don't even know yourself. You wish to see the details and yet you are blind. |

i have to agree with max Volnutt here. I personally thought Resident Evil was a terrible movie and I did not enjoy it at all. If this is supposed to be the crown jewel in Anderson's career, he has no business even going near such excellent genres as Alien and Predator. Also, Antarctica? Please tell me you have some understanding of the Alien lifecycle, how are they supposed to breed? Not unless there is a city in Antarctica. Actually, according to the Alien universe, there is a city there, remember in the first movie when Ripley confirmed the position of the Nostromo with Antarctic traffic control? So if these scientists (how cliche) go to some remote patch of ice to witness this battle, the story would be a huge violation of universally respected Alien cannon (term for rules regarding story).
Also, this theoretical scene where 3 predators have to fight off thousands of aliens. Since when do aliens need numbers to win? In Alien 1 and 3, 1 alien, not hundreds, wipes out just about everyone. Aliens are fast, clever, strong, and totally unpredictable. Any species can storm a pyramid. What makes Aliens so frightenning is that you don't even know they are there until you are dead. So, if you want to improve your story, make sure the Aliens are clever and don't just charge into machine gun fire like idiots; take out the whole stupid evil scientist company scheme plot (it is cliche and was never any good in the first place); lastly, put a large population close by so the aliens can breed, it doesn't do a lot of good to have a hundred eggs but only 3 hosts.
"I've done far worse than kill you, I've hurt you. And I wish to go on, hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her, marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet, buried alive, buried alive..." -Khan Noonian Singh |
