'Anonymous' sends in this report from the set of "Anger Management," on Monday night/Tuesday morning June 24 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.
Before the shoot, extras were told (via e-mail) not to wear red, bright blue, or any fluorescent colors, and no logos of any kind except Yankee logos. Yankee Stadium seats about 55,000 people, but only 2,000 extras were on the set each night (Monday was the 4th of at least 5 Stadium shooting nights). Extras, all unpaid, were served a "snack" of a pear, cookies, grape juice and two Hershey's Kisses. Ummm. "Dinner" was a sandwich, potato chips and bottled water. Blech.
Filming began about 8:30pm. and ended sometime after 3:30am. The Stadium was strangely empty, because the 2,000 extras were crowded into just two or three sections, all on the lower levels. One section was filled with "fake" (flat painted wood) people. Other than that, and the zillions of production people all over, everything looked like a normal night at the ballpark. The "Yankees" were represented by look-alike actors in pinstripes (most of whom are no longer Yankees, even though the movie is set in the present day). There was a fake Paul O'Neill, a fake David Justice, and a fake Mendoza. They were supposedly playing the Boston Red Sox. Yes, there was a fake Nomar. He looked alot like the genuine article, but actually threw the ball like a rank amateur. They all did.
The first celeb to enter the arena, from the tunnel behind home plate, was Adam Sandler. He wore a black t-shirt and jeans. Sandler waved to the crowd and got a big ovation. In the movie, Sandler plays a man named Dave Buznik. Sandler is always totally accessible to the extras and spectators on his films, and during the night he made it a point to walk from home to third so everyone could see him up close. He even told a few jokes to the crowd, and signed autographs for a lucky few.
Next, making his grand entrance, was Jack Nicholson -- in a baseball hat, white t-shirt and jeans, with a scraggly beard. As he walked to the field near home plate, the crowd cheered from around third. Jack looked over and flashed his famous killer smile at the crowd, but in doing so he failed to see a cable, and missed a step. He righted himself immediately, then signaled "I'm OK," and the crowd went totally wild.
Marisa Tomei walked in wearing a peach-colored blouse and jeans, looking very similiar to the way she appeared in her Oscar-winning role in "My Cousin Vinny," and the party was set to begin.
The premise of the movie is that Sandler (Dave Buznik) is forced to take an Anger Management course from Nicholson, who is a nut case himself. Also, they are both competing for the affections of Marisa Tomei.
In the Stadium scenes shot Monday night, Nicholson and Tomei arrive together to watch a Yankee game. Robert Merrill sings the national anthem to open the game. There is a brief scene with real-life Yankee pitcher Roger Clemens. Sandler must get to the Stadium in time to stop Nicholson from proposing to Tomei during the game. He does, and confronts him. A fight ensues. Nicholson chases Sandler out of the stands, down to the infield, and around the field. Later, the crowd chants "Kiss her Dave! Kiss her Dave!" to Sandler's character. Sandler kisses Tomei, and the crowd goes insane.
All of this action, which will probably amount to no more then 5 minutes of screen time, took over seven hours to film. And lots and lots of pears, cookies, and bottled water. Ain't Hollywood grand?
