| Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King |

| Anticipation Level: |

| How excited (or not) I am to see this movie... |
|
| My thoughts on this movie... |
|
Now let's make something clear before I say what I'm going to say. The Return of the King is my favorite book of all time. I laughed out loud and cried several times while reading this book... and everytime I read it, my reactions are no less emotional. I went into this movie at the midnight premiere last night hoping my favorite parts would be in it, but knowing much was going to be cut out due to time restraints. It was a very very good movie, but it was definately NOT the book. For all of you who are expecting key scence from the book, you will be disappointed... here's some examples...
The defeat of Saruman and Wormtongue's throwing of the seeing stone at Gandalf: This was simply not there. Saruman reamined locked in his tower and did not speak to Gandalf... Pippin just happened to see the seeing stone in the water and picked it up.
Frodo and Sam marching with the Orcs: not there at all. They do disguise themselves as orcs, but they don't meet any along the way.
Aragorn healing the sick: None of this was there. I was actually hoping to see the scene with the nurse and herb man talking entirely too much, but it never happened. These scenes, I think, are some of the best in the book.
Pippin and his friends in the Guard: None of this was there, actually there was really no interaction shown between Pippin and the other members of the Guard in Minas Tirith.
Eowyn and Faramir's meeting: Nothing, once again. At the end they are standing together, but that's about it.
The reclaiming of the Shire: Nothing at all. They got back to the Shire and everything was still happy and the way it was supposed to be. They didn't go through the journey home with the many partings either.
There were also a few things that were changed or added...
Instead of Sam going into Sheelob's lair with Frodo, Gollum tricks Frodo into believing Sam wants the ring, so Frodo tells Sam to go home. Sam, however, won't give up and comes to Frodo's rescue after Frodo has already been poisoned by Sheelob.
The Path of the Dead part was added onto, to help with understanding, I guess. The book never really goes through everything that happens on the Path, but in the movie you're taken all the way through to where Aragorn's meets up with the ghosts and asks for their help.
I believe a troll fell on Pippin in the book when he saw the Eagles coming at the Black Gate, and he had to be healed by Aragorn later... this was left out, but he did see the Eagles, who came to help attack the flying Nazgul.
There were still some really good scenes in the movie, however...
Aragorn's speeches to the men are always stirring.
Legolas and Gimli's who-can-kill-the-most game continues to be quite funny. Legolas jumps onto an Oliphant, cuts the ropes that hold the sort of carriage that the people are sitting in, then shoots the Oliphant in the head with 3 arrows, causing it to come crashing down as he sort of surfs down its trunk and lands in front of an astonished Gimli whose only reply is "That still only counts as 1!!"
The very aged Bilbo is shown towards the end still asking Frodo if he can see his "old ring" which Frodo claims to have lost.
Sam finally gets up the nerve to ask Rosie Cotton to marry him.
Merry and Pippin do at one point dance on a table singing their Green Dragon song.
Pippin sings a song for Denethor.
I could go on forever... like I said, the movie is really good. It's just that I was expecting to see my favorite parts, which were mostly left out. Go see it... but... read the book.
