January 30, 2004 — During a recent training session in preparation for his role as boxer Jim Braddock, Russell Crowe sustained a minor injury to his shoulder. Treatment will include arthroscopic surgery therefore delaying film start of Cinderella Man by approximately one month. The new start date is expected to be April 2004.
Although this is the same shoulder that Mr. Crowe injured while training for "Flora Plum," the previous repairs are fully intact; this current injury has affected a different area of the shoulder.
The injury came while Mr. Crowe was in the boxing ring training in Sydney. Mr. Crowe's dislocated shoulder is expected to delay the start of production on the film by approximately one month. Principal photography is now scheduled to begin in early April. These details were confirmed today by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment.
"I've never known any actor who dedicates himself to a part with more intensity than Russell," stated Brian Grazer, producer of "Cinderella Man." "He approaches every role with a rigorous discipline, using his mind, his body and his spirit. To prepare for his role as Jim Braddock, Russell has been training with some of the foremost boxing instructors in the world, and that commitment is what led to the injury to his shoulder. All of us wish him a fast recovery because we simply cannot wait to see him apply his talent and training to this part."
