I love The Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander.
They're kids books (fantasy) but their exciting. I've also read the Chrnicles of Narnia like 20 times, and they're good each time..... FANTASY RULES!!!!!

The Nightrunner Series by Lynn Flewelling and her new series which only has the first book so far.

Think Tolkien w/ spies and more macabre.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding, A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels by Madeline L'Engle (anything written by her is usually good)...and if you haven't read them yet, the Hitchhiker books by Douglas Adams. I could give you tons of others, but I need to know the genre that you want to read.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christe is really good. I love that book. Harry Potter isn't too bad. I just finished reading Brave New World for my English class. It is okay if you have an open mind and enjoy wierd, twisted, way too detailed plots.

Definately go for The Wheel of Time. If you're lucky, book 10 will be out by the time you've finished book 9. I'd also highly recommend the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Doesn't matter where you start. Every one is hilarious.

I suggest reading anything by David Eddings, especially The Belgariad , which is a series of books starting with Pawn of Prophecy . I'm on the second book and so far, it's great.

Oh, and Lord of the Rings. Naturally

Yes, but Brave New World was detailed to the point where I would fall asleep. Never mind, don't read that book, it is a waste of time. Books they make you read at my school are all so dry. What was I thinking?

The Discworld novels are a must, as are any of Douglas Adams books.

Also worth reading:
Frank Herbert's Dune series
Isaac Asimov's Foundation and Robot novels

For a more serious non fantasy/scifi series, check out Len Deighton's Harry Palmer and Bernard Sampson novels.

If your going to read "The Eye of the World" be prepared to be drawn into a great series and read them all. Also you could try Diana Gabaldon'd Outlander books, if you like historical fantasy. These include: Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, and the Fiery Cross.
