Look at this post from theonering.net:

One does not normally expect to hear the words "Frodo's friend Sam" out of the mouth of White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, but that's exactly what I heard this afternoon when I had the White House press briefing playing in the background on the TV. Seems Sean Astin has been named to serve on the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Does anyone know what this council is? I don't, but I'm glad our Sam is out there helping the USA!

what does this mean? is Sean Astin going to be president? i've heard of the "Gandalf for President" buttons way-back-when, but "Sam for President"? i dunno, he just doesn't have the same qualitites as Gandalf.
but, as always, you have to be born in America to be president

I don't know, but Council on Service and Civic whatsis seems to mean that he is going to be somewhat of an ambassador to persuade Americans to volunteer their own services to those in need. I know that he, personally, has gone to read at his daughter's school. If any of the parents of my kids at school would do that, we'd be in seventh heaven. I rarely get parental involvement at all. More power to Mr. Astin!

Well, I didn't vote for him, so this might be a bit cynical but...

It means that Bush is setting up a token committee with no power to try to persuade people to be better citizens by volunteering, etc. It's just a feel good, oh-aren't-I-being-so-good
-to-them-poor-people, Public Relations stunt to distract from the fact that he is sending this country to war while sending the economy into the toilet.

Like I said, just a bit cynical.

I think it's the commitee tha truns the Peace Corps that teaches poor underdeloped countries: Civics, Politics, and Eductional and Social Welfare programs (that sometimes don't work the way they should).

I think Sam Gamgee is a good choice if the alternative is gollum for Govenor. EEk Horrors!
