I can't remember if there's been a thread like this. I can only remember a worst movies thread. Anyway, one of my new year's resolutions is to become a movie buff this year, so I was wondering if everybody could post some of their favorite movies (besides LOTR, which of course are my faves!) so I can put some good ones on my rental list. Thanks! Here's some others on my top ten list:
Star Wars (the original three only)

Top Gun

Dirty Dancing

The Shawshank Redemption

Apocalypse Now

Saving Private Ryan

Bambi (fave Disney movie)

The Shining (fave horror movie)

Manhattan Murder Mystery (fave in the Woody Allen category)

This is difficult! In the order I thought of them:

Now Voyager
Elizabeth
Hamlet (2 hrs of Kenneth Branagh as Hamlet, not that awful Mel Gibson one with the Freudian interpretation)
Spaceballs
LOTR--I can safely say all 3 because I'm sure I'll love ROTK
Much Ado About Nothing
Beauty & The Beast
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney one--follows the novel decently)
Robin Hood: Men In Tights
Blazing Saddles
Three Musketeers (what can I say, I'm a sucker for Chris O'Donnell )
Star Wars (4-6 only)
Harry Potter (both)
Austin Powers (1 & 2--3 was short on material to me)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

There are probably more but I can't think of them and I don't want to bore everyone
