Alright, i have seen this movie many times!! the first time i saw it in a theater in HK and i watched it 5 times more after i bought the vcd. This movie is really really hilarious.
I see some people making predictions on the movie and comparing it to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Iron Monkey which were two successful movies with Chinese style coreograph martial arts (can't spell but i am sure you get my meaning ). You see, you people are making the wrong comparisons!! sure they have martial arts but isn't that it for similarities? Have you people forgotten an American film that invented the concept of 'embedding special talent in playing sports' which was the Mighty Ducks movie? I'll have to say, that is the only worthy comparison against Shaolin Soccer because they have really really close similarities!!
I dont really want to spoil the Shaolin Soccer movie but all i can say it, the structure of how the storylines go is the same as the first Mighty Ducks movie and a little bit of the second Mighty Ducks movie, D2: the Mighty Ducks.
Basically these are the similarities in both movies:
-beginning-coach remembers aweful memories in the past, fellow player deliberately gave him a career ending injury
-coach wants to get revenge, finds joe blows of the streets that has extroadinary talents to form a sports team.
-joins a tournament, beat everyone and later going up against the team that belongs to the coach's arch rival
-team underestimates the bad guy team, bad guy team tottally opened a canned of whoop A** on them
-by luck, the good guy team beats the bad guy team and wins the championships
But there are some differences between both movies but i ain't going to say anymore. You'll have to watch the movie and find out.
Also i hope Miramax won't be lazy and just read out the English subtitles in the Chinese version of the movie and use that as the English dub. That would be cheap and IMO, the English subtitles in the Chinese version is kinda dull. I remember there's one part where Stephen Chow said a bunch of stuff in Chinese and the subtitle only gave it a 5 English word translation. Also, the Chinese profanity doesn't match the English profanity in the subtitles. I just hope Miramax would make a note of that and make their own dubbing.
NOTE: I AIN'T PUTTING SHAOLIN SOCCER DOWN!! DON'T START A FLAME WAR PLEASE!

Now I think about it, that is the only compariosion to think of, only similataries, other then that this movie comes out being original. I mean come on have you ever have of people with special powers putting that into a sport. I mean really fighting placed ina game that goes beyond the limiting, folks pushing their selves to do the impossible, to play kund fu soccer, lol!!!!!!!!!!! I mean come on the people are doing like street fighter, matrix moves. i mean thes epeople are really powerful kicking a ball so aghrd it causes a shock wave through the air which rips up the ground and cuasing a ancient technique of the ball to be engulfed in fire resembling a fire dragon that looks really cool.
Other then that they don't have to much in common, lol. One thin I would like to add, the bald girl goalie, don't care if she is bald I wouldn't mind if she was my girl friend. She would protect me always, lol. No one would dare try to kick my ass, lol. It's more than just about power, strength, and speed, but also about skills as well. Your power means nothing if you don't have the proper skills to back it up with newbie!
