May 28, 2002 — In the crowded weekend of Memorial Day (which, in fact was the highest grossing weekend in history) Insomnia took on heavy weights Star Wars and Spider-Man, and also newbies like Spirit (opening on a huge 3317 theaters) and Enough (2623 theaters). If that isn't a lot of competition, there's still strong word-of-mouth hits like About a Boy and Unfaithful.
With Unfaithful being the only other R rated feature in the bunch, the success of Insomnia was depending on a strong interest in the adult crowd. Despite it all, the film grossed $26.2 million dollars, on 2610 screens, giving it the second highest per screen average of $10,000. (Second to Star Wars' $19,400 and beating out Spidey's $9,400) It seems as though Warner Brothers, who distributed Insomnia, has a solid hit on their hands, after such flops as Sandra Bullock's Murder by Numbers. We'll have to stay tuned to see if Insomnia can keep enough auidences awake to fight off even more competition in the weeks to come. (On June 7th, it will go up against another WB film, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood) |
