May 26, 2002 — The Washington Post had very good things to say about Insomnia in their review of the film. Here's a clip:
But there's more to the movie than integration of form and content. Thanks to the breathtaking work of screenwriter Hillary Seitz, production designer Nathan Crowley, cinematographer Wally Pfister (who shot "Memento") and Dody Dorn, who edited it, "Insomnia" is a contrapuntal symphony. It's thematically gloomy, yet almost blindingly bright. It's claustrophobic yet stylistically liberating. And while it's morally damning in some places, it's also deeply compassionate in others.
Don't think this movie's devoid of action. The story is nothing but, especially when Dormer chases Finch across a river of floating, rolling logs. Finch is sure-footed as he traverses the tricky obstacle course. But Dormer's tired, more ragged. What happens to him, in those tense few moments, is one of the most exhilarating scenes of the year.
