THEIR first offering was a "spectacular flop" but the failure of Viva Laughlin has not deterred Hugh Jackman from taking risks. The television series, axed in October from America's CBS network after two episodes, will be followed this week by Deception, the first feature film from Seed Productions, the company set up by Jackman, his wife Deborra-Lee Furness and business partner John Palermo.
Deception will be followed by the blockbuster film Wolverine - the X-Men spin-off co-produced by 20th Century Fox and filming in Sydney. But Jackman said Deception, a thriller shot in New York on a "modest budget" of $20 million, was intended to be a low-key release.
"I have always been interested in the long term," he said. "With this film I had a lot to learn Because we made it outside the studio system, we had a lot of rope." For Jackman, who relished playing the film's bad guy, doubling up in the role of producer did not come automatically.
"Sometimes I had to be a bit of a heavy how do you say to a director I didn't really like that scene? It didn't come naturally to me." The film, co-starring Michelle Williams and Ewan McGregor, is released in Australia tomorrow and in the US on Friday.
