The acting was once again weak, the story simple, and the film was short, and somewhat rushed but while the film was flawed like the original I was still very entertained. Evans and Chiklis are still perfect for their roles, and the action sequences are pretty cool. It was nice to be entertained for 90 minutes. But I did not like the design, nor defeat of Galactus. It was uninspiring and anti-climatic. But it was cool that they set up a Silver Surfer movie. All in all it was a good popcorn flick, and it was nice to see a comic book movie have fun with itself and not be serious, or dark like all other incarnations. Even if it wasnt too faithful to the source material I was entertained and that's all that matters IMO.
I'm just going to be forward and tell BatSTUD to NOT see the film because quite frankly, we are, and I mean we, are tired of the bitching and moaning. No offense, though, because I dont want there to be a flame war over the word "adaptation" and "fanboy" and "hollypop."

Since this is the "official" review thread, I will repeat the basics that I've posted elsewhere.
Nearly every review has been dead on so far. All can be thought of as positive while being negative at the same time. Hardcore comic fans will run out screaming for a refund, while lessor fans will feel they at least got their money's worth. It was abundantly clear the film was geared towards kids and kids only. Fans of the first will be happy for the most part. I didn't like the original and could barely sit through the entire sequel.
Main bad points in my mind:
1. Too childish. I understand superheroes are role models so you have to keep the film in a range suitable for kids, but they went overboard on this one.
2. Source material was raped and mutilated. They weren't even close.
3. Doom stealing the board. It wasn't entirely bad, but come on....seriously??
4. Silver Surfer wiping out Galactus the dust cloud with a single blow. Was I dreaming that part?? I hope so or the Silver Surfer spin-off is gonna suck as much as this film did.
5. (Continued from #4) Galactus the dust cloud. Okay, we got a tiny hint of a face, but he was wasted and disrespected more than Venom was.
In my opinion, Silver Surfer was not properly done and the teasing during production of Galactus was again just a ploy to put asses in the seats. That to me is wrong and should be considered false advertising.
I hope this is the end of the FF franchise because they honestly should have, and could have, done much better. A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves." - Edward R. Murrow

I don't know about anyone else, but I (and most people in the theater I saw it in) thought it was many times better than 1, if nothing else.
What really bothers me is that they get the family chemistry right so easily, but everything else around it seems to have no effort put into it at all. I accept the dance scene here, because, come on, how much interesting stuff can you do with Reed's powers? Sure, he was a little slap-sticky here, but again, the FF has never been super-dramatic, although the potential is there, and they don't need to be. I'll freely admit that the dialouge was horrible in places, especially when Reed does the whole stand-up-to-the-bully routine with the general, but really, a few hokey remarks was a small price to pay for a lot of great back and forth between the main four.
For some of you, this may ruin any credibility I have, but I love Doom. Julian McMahon is great on TV, and I just like him in this. The last ten or fifteen minutes of the first movie made it bearable for me, and the shots of him "coming back" early in this one seemed to point in the direction of him being done justice as (arguably) Marvel's best villain. The whole Doom surfing thing didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, although seeing him just take the power out of the board would have worked a little better, to me. Still, he's going to have some part in 3, contractually, and he's in regular armor now, no metal skin, so I think they're going in the right direction now. Personally, I want to see the "Unthinkable" storyline done in 3, which would give Doom about 1,000,000% more bad-___ moments than 1 and 2 combined.
Galactus- how a guy that is so intimidating in the book would have worked on screen is hard to say. I don't like the cloud, myself, but am not totally sure a 150 foot guy would have worked either. If they had just shown that there was a ship or something inside the cloud, I'd have been happy. As is, the idea of a cloud giving a guy enough power to suck it up and destroy it seems a little out there, but hey, the book is based on ridiculous super science theories and experiments, I'll deal. Although seeing a couple of giant purple boots, or hearing James Earl Jones (really, who else could do his voice?) saying "I am Galactus, devourer of worlds!" would have made me wet my fan-boy pants.
Johnny/Super-Skrull - It sounds like people are mad because they didn't just use the Super-Skrull in the first place. To me, they just used the whole idea to prove that Johnny isn't the complete jerk he seems to be, which was a nice little plot thread. Plus, it led to some funny power switches, although the first one with Sue seemed a little....gratuitous, anyone?
Stan Lee - Okay, his cameo in Spiderman 3 kind of pulled me out of the whole movie, and he was just some random old guy. Here, he all but says "I should be here, I created them, hey audience, you're watching a movie about fictional characters", but for some reason I loved this one. Great that he's still asked to show up in his characters movies, even if a lot of people don't get who he is. If only Kirby were still alive, I'm sure we would have gotten the two of them sitting at the wedding, blowing their noses in comical "I'm so happy" fashion. While watching, as the guard threw him out, I just imagined them saying "No, really, I'm Stan Lee!" "Yeah, yeah, and I'm Jack Kirby, move it, gramps." or go super jokey and have Stan randomly yell "Excelsior!", or "Congratulations kids, beautiful wedding, 'nuff said."
The Surfer - Really never a huge fan, but he was pretty kick butt here. Not a lot of talking, which he never did anyway, and looked really good, both shiny and dull versions. Bravo Doug Jones.
I'm sure there are things I missed, I'll add them later if I think of it. But overall, I really liked this movie, and am pleasantly surprised to be able to say that. Here's my review, my two cents as it were(which is still two cents than what my opinions are worth):
THE GOOD
- IT DIDN'T SUCK!!
That's always a good thing, right? Yes, it's much more of a kiddie movie than the first, but it's not that bad. The story works pretty well and the acting is good.
- MR. FANTASTIC IS COOLER!
This time, we finally see Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) get some respect as the leader and rightful smartest man in Marvel this time around. From his new high-tech lab to his inventions like the Fantasticar to actually having the b*lls to chew out General Hager (Andre Braugher) after he doesn't show him and the team respect, this film still manages to also balance him out by keeping his nerdiness intact.
- THE THING/TORCH MOMENTS
I loved the Human Torch (Chris Evans) and Thing (Michael Chiklis) moments in the first film and they're just as good, if not even better, this time around. From such moments as
Human Torch flying outside of a plane and waving through the window to the disgruntled Thing seated in coach (to which Thing grumbles "I hope it rains"), to Johnny's talk with Thing in the bar about how lucky he is to have someone and how he'd spend his final hours if it was the end, which comes up later in the finale battle,
this stuff never gets old.
- THE SILVER SURFER
Okay, he needs a backstory and it would've been nice to actually SEE how he became the Surfer, but he does have some really cool moments, including the casual tossing away of fired missiles shown in the commercials. Also, having Laurence "Morpheus" Fishburne as the Surfer's voice is just icing on the cake.
- INVISIBLE WOMAN IS COOLER
I didn't care much for Jessica Alba's portrayal of Susan Storm in the first film, but here, she is even better the second time. She has a better role by better showing off her powers
(even if she does again get subjected to jokes of her unintentionally showing off some skin at just the wrong moment to a crowd)
, she has more heart than the first (especially when talking to the Surfer), and her relationship with Reed is handled much better -- 'cause they're actually together.
But sadly, with the good, there must come --
THE BAD
- WHERE WERE THE MEMORABLE ACTION SEQUENCES?
Even though we get to see the cast display their powers more richly and far cooler than the first, particularly the Thing and Invisible Woman, there weren't any "holy CRAP, didja see that?!?" moments. Sure, the Torch/Surfer chase is fine, but the Surfer gets the best moments, while the team doesn't really fight this time around.
Sure, Human Torch takes on Dr. Doom with the other FF members' powers, but it's way too short and ends waaaaay too quick. Even the first movie had the ENTIRE team take on Doom, one on one and all together, but not in this one! UGH!!)
Even the final battle is too lame to mention.
- DOOM ISN'T ALL THAT IMPROVED
The major complaint with the first film, to me, was the ruination of Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon). Sure, McMahon did excellent work with what he was given (even if it was "Marco... polo!!"), but even though he oozed evil when he came on-screen in the first, he wasn't the ruler of Latveria, but much like Norman Osborn in the first "Spider-Man" by being a ruined businessman who later takes revenge on his board member(s). Sure, the new suit was cool and he
stole Silver Surfer's surfboard
, but he still wasn't the Doom we know and love.
His awakening from being frozen in the first film's finale was too quick, his role was under-developed, he wasn't shown as the Latverian ruler and super-genius from the comics, and he was still out of character. After he steals Silver Surfer's surfboard and Mr. Fantastic warns him he must get rid of the surfboard, he must get rid of it before Galactus comes and eats Earth, but Doom declines 'cause he has the power he's always wanted. Um... wouldn't he care that doing so would destroy the planet he's on? Where would he go if Earth was destroyed since he's said mentioned ruler of Latveria? Wouldn't he miss his homeland? Wouldn't he try to kill Galactus and destroy the FF so he could rule with his new powers and be unbeatable? And how does he go from being a galactic powerhouse to getting his a** kicked and getting knocked into the ocean where he apparently drowns?
UGH!! Time to have Doom return in the film and get it right, for real, NEXT time!!
- GALACTUS -- GA-LAK-TUS -- WHATEVER THE HECK HE IS
A space cloud? That's it? He's a giant bunch of clouds that approaches Earth?!? I know people would've complained the "giant dude with the forked helmet" look would've looked campy, but at least it'd be better than SPACE CLOUDS!!! His defeat is also WAY too quick and WAAAAY too lame. The Surfer just decides "Oops, Invisible Woman died saving my life. Time to resurrect her, fly into space, and blow him up in ten seconds."
This is the worst super-villain to big screen treatment this side of Topher Grace's Venom and Vinnie "I'm the Juggernaut, b***h!!" Jones.
- IT'S TOO SHORT AND MOVES TOO FAST
Sure, we all don't want the film to be too long, but this was just too quick for my taste. Even "X-Men" was longer and had better character development than this! Sure, I loved the quartet, but they're under-developed in terms of character development and are, essentially, supporting characters in their own movie next to the Silver Surfer. This is a FANTASTIC FOUR movie, remember? Isn't the point of a sequel to get into the back-stories and develop the existing characters more? It's as if they took a page from the handbook of "X-Men: The Last Stand" by going "Character development? What's that? S***w that noise!!" and just made a film with them in it. And even the Silver Surfer doesn't get that much revealed, even though he's getting his own spin-off. As I mentioned, Dr. Doom and the Surfer both especially needed more back-story and development. At 90 minutes, without the end credits, this just crams in way too much and moves too fast for you to realize just what's going on. There's no real sense of drama or sense of doom (no, not THAT Doom), which is surprising 'cause it's a film about the apparent end of the WORLD unless our heroes stop the latest threat in their path. Sure, the first wasn't as deep or heavy as other comic films, but it wasn't supposed to. It still found the time to introduce and develop its characters by making them seem like real people. The second, quite simply, is second best compared to the first.
- STAN LEE'S CAMEO
Yes, it was funny and memorable
that he played himself
, but not reprising his role as Mailman Willie Lumpkin?!? What the --?!? It would've been better if
Stan, as Willie, walked to the wedding as Stan, as himself, was thrown out and he asked someone, "Who was that guy?" or something. TWO Stan Lee roles in one film would've been funnier.
Also, the finale could've been a LOT better as well, but I'm not in the mood to whine about that now.
So, all in all, this is a B at worst and B+ at best. It's nowhere near as bad to me as Marvel's previous two unforgivable and unwatchable evils ("X3" and "Spider-Man 3" -- no offense intended to anyone that liked them, though). However, for a summer movie sequel meant to be action packed, it's not FF2, but a "too": too short, too fast, too lacking in character development, too little on actual fighting.
Next time, make the film about the actual FF members, get the PG-13 rating back, make it longer, have some actual fights and make Dr. Doom the menacing, brilliant, dangerous enemy equal to that of his comic counterpart.
I just hope next year's other Marvel installments, "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk", are actually worthy my $6.50 admission.

The audience gave a round of applause.
As a general moviegoer who knew absolutely NOTHING about the Fantastic Four, I actually LOVED the film. Obviously not perfect, and I do wish it was much longer (I hate when movies I'm seriously enjoying are too short) but still a great flick. Maybe it's because I'm clueless about the truth of FF so am rather unaware what should or shouldn't have been, which pretty much means I'm capable of sucking up whatever they dish out, but eh I guess it worked. And it's PG! Go friggin' figure. Of course, I'd prefer a darker "R" flick any day, but this one was still an awesome experience. I just loved it and will definitely see it again.
Mr. Fantastic was cool I guess (but I'm still fond of Elastigirl ), Thing was cool, Invisible Woman, despite her pestersome Mary Jane moments, was semi-cool. But I loved the evolution of the character Johnny Storm, and how he was finally beginning to realize that his actions and decisions matter to everyone else and not just him, be them the wrong or right ones. And of course, his interaction with The Thing was peachy and squeaky clean. Good freaking fun. I particularly loved that line: "I just don't want to wake up one morning finding out your girlfriend died in a rockslide." Which of course was in reference to Thing's relationship with Alecia.
Dr. Doom was EH at best. I would have been just fine if he wasn't in the film. Except if he wasn't, I wouldn't have had that cool Doom/Surfer moment. Gawsh I LOVED that moment when he ticked the surfer off and the Surfer's like "Oh no you didn't!" But Doom just doesn't do it for me as a bad guy. He's kinda annoying, if I must admit. Can someone enlighten me as to what kind of character he's supposed to REALLY be? Because I don't see the major threat. What ELSE is he supposed to be other than a guy with lightning? Because as of now, all I'm seeing is Dr. Christian Troy, a horny plastic sergeon who can't get enough sex.
Now as far as the Silver Surfer? OH MY FREAKING GOODNESS. He has got to be the most awesome character I've seen in a freaking long time on the big screen. He was just so, so...addictively cool. You couldn't take your eyes off him. I mean, you know he's not real, but something about him captures your attention. He was so smooth and elegant, no doubt thanks to the whoever the guy is that's portraying him. Scary, yet gentle. Brilliant casting choice. I did hate how
Doom got ahold of the board, because that means it's less screen time with Silver Surfer on it. Blah. I didn't care to see Doom ride around on that thing. Wanted more Surfer!!
But anyway, I cannot WAIT to see a spin-off of Silver Surfer. Gawsh he ruled. RULED I SAY!
Now a lot of peeps seemed disappointed with Galactus, who, according to my comic geek friend, is supposed to be this huge, giant Sentineal type thing. And honestly, I'm kinda glad that they didn't go that route. I think it would be been too MUCH a stretch, at least this soon in. I kinda liked the idea of the huge black hole-like cloud getting ready to literally suck the earth into its "mouth." That's more "threatening." I dunno. I don't think a huge purple robot sentinel thing would have been too menacing, or at least too convincing. This isn't Transformers! (not yet anyway ). But hey, that's me. This film's Galactus was menacing enough even if you can't really see him. Hmm, though I will admit, it would have been much cooler to hear some sort of bellowing, low-frequency voice from within the cloud, something that proves this is truly a menacing and living creature out to devous planets and not just some freak of universal nature.
But anyway, I just loved it. And other than Spiderman 3 (I still can't forgive that atrocity!), I found myself quickly thinking, "Man, I gotta see that again!" and I intend to! I had such fun.
Did I mention how much I LOVED the Silver Surfer?? Lawrence Fishburne is strangely sexier when I can just hear his voice for some reason.

CC, just regarding Doom ignoring the consequences of not
returning the Surfer's powers
... Although I'm sure it wasn't intentional on the director's part, we are dealing with not only (maybe) the top Marvel villain of all time, but also the biggest ego. He naturally assumes anything others can do, he can do better, quicker, and easier. I can guarantee that Doom would barely give Galactus a second thought, adopt an "I'll get around to dealing with it" attitude, and spend his time thinking up creative ways to torture Reed and co.
Stan Lee...come on, the guy really can do no evil. Even given the worst cameo of all time, (say, Spidey 3) he's just got enough of that weird goofy old guy charm to make it work. At the same time I was thinking how bad the " 'nuff said" in Spidey was, the comic geek side of my brain was screaming "whoa, he said 'nuff said!"
And just a side note, kind of a favor to me... never, ever, EVER, use the name Gah-Lak-Tus. Ultimate Nightmare/Spaceman/Waste of Time and Money was a huge turd. Honestly, if not for it, we might have gotten
big purple guy with horns Galactus
instead of what we ended up with. Good to know you at least found it enjoyable too, I was afraid I'd be in the extreme minority there. | Lindoyle - Doom is basically supposed to be an aristocratic jack***. He's as smart, and at times smarter than, Reed, and is supposed to run his own country, not company. He got scarred in an experiment he rushed into and blamed Reed even though the mistake was clearly his fault. This is what I think the movie character is missing, something to really make him resent and straight want to kill Reed. I thought they fixed it at the beginning, but then he gets fixed right up, bad idea. Doom basically reclaimed Latveria's throne after his accident, restoring his name as the ruling family. I guess all the random pieces of junk they showed were supposed to lead you to this conclusion, and if that's the case, they did a pretty crappy job. He rules his country by fear, so even though no one really suffers or wants for anything, it's still a police state run by Doombots (Robots that are made to look like him, just so his face is everywhere. Very vain, even with the scarred face. Lastly, he knows just as much as Reed about science, but is also accomplished in sorcery, something Reed just can't get, since it isn't based on logic or and kind of reasoning. If you have the time, $, and interest, I'd suggest reading the "Unthinkable" trade I mentioned before. The first issue is basically a complete character sketch of Doom, and the story following it is, to me, arguably the best FF story ever. I just saw it again today, which is twice for me in one weekend! I spit on thee, Spiderman 3! Fantastic 4 is where it's now at! If part 3 manages to pull off an even better movie (Gosh I so hope they don't screw it up), then this will be my new favorite comic book franchise.
marvelfan said: The ending?
Hope the SURFER comes back and the big G and a spin off surfer movie will show more of Galactus. I don't see why they WOULDN'T show more Galactus in Surfer's spin-off, which I hear is going to be a prequel. Obviously, this means that they'd have to have Galactus in there somewhere, and probably more intense to better prove his cosmic powers. Heck, I won't even write Galactus off permanently from the F4 movies either.
I can visualize a part 3 starting with Silver Surfer floating around in space, having him continue to regain consciousness, look out into the void, and see all the particles he thought he destroyed start to come together once more into the ominous being they used to be. He'd gasp and be like, "No...it cannot be." And poof, we've got our Galactus again. Doesn't he have the ability to change into ANYTHING anyway? Yah, let's not write him off just yet. Unless Fox does what it's famous for and screw up great characters even more, but I can't be THAT negative, not yet.

I didn't really have high expectations for this film, as I was not entirely pleased with the first one. However, I have to say that this film was easily 10 times better than first film. And even though I didn't like the idea of Johnny being able to absorb the others' powers, it kind of made sense toward the end.
I liked that there was more character development in this film so that they didn't seem one-dimensional like they were in the first film. However, at the same time, toward the end of the film with
Sue dying, there was a serious lack of emotion. I mean, is it too much to ask for one tiny tear from Mr. Fantastic?
The best part of the film, hands down, was the Silver Surfer. To finally see him on the big screen was too cool for words. I can't wait for his own film.
Now, I understand that with comic to film adaptations there have to be changes to certain things. Although I don't agree with how they handled Galactus, what they came up with made sense in its own right and worked for the film. However, I don't think that the Silver Surfer
destroyed Galactus, as some may be lead to believe. It just looked too easy. Besides comic characters are notorious from coming back from the "dead" (i.e. Doom). So I think there is a very good possibility that we'll see Galactus again in a future FF movie and maybe even in his proper form.
Needless to say, overall, I was pleasantly surprised. HEY YOU! YEAH YOU!! GET "LOST"!!!

Okay, it was not a Cinema Masterpiece
But I Don't Care!!
I Liked It!!!
It was better than the 1st.
It had good action and humor.
I Loved when Sue turned on the Flame
I knew we would not see the Giant Purple Galactus.
I knew they would keep him in the shadows, or something like that.
so that was no surprise
I thought the Surfer was good, But Not Worthy of His Own Movie
As far as the whole Doom and the Board thing. Well if you say they all got thier powers from cosmic rays, then it is believable that Doom could control the board
I like the ending in the novelization much better than the movie's, it was much more likely.
If the make a 3rd, and I hope they do, I'll lay down my money to see it.
Since they broke the "No Aliens" rule, maybe we will see the Super Skull, or The Royal Guard.
It's Clobberin' Time
"FireLord" of the Fantastic Four Club
"Dr Strange" of the Spidey Club
"Riley" of the Buffy/Angel Club
