It's been 10 years since George Lucas started this controversial trilogy, so I say it's time to look back at all of it now that the hype is surely dead.

My thoughts.

I'm gonna throw it out there and say I actually prefer The Phantom Menace to to the rest of the prequels for various reasons. It was actually shot on film. It has a clear narrative. John Williams made his last masterpiece of a score (which quite frankly is more than the film deserved). The special effects haven't dated (EX: Attack of the Clones ). The sequences such as the Pod Race and the climax is still far more impressive than the two that came after. And Liam Neeson is probably the only leading actor in the prequels that has a pulse. There are plenty of other reaons I forget to mention.

But the biggest factor on why I prefer this film to the other two is one simple reason: Hayden Christensen is not in it. If there was one major fatal flaw to the prequels, it was his performance as Anakin Skywalker. That's the thing that really killed these films for me.

My Film Rankings 2009
1. Inglourious Basterds - 5 of 5
2. Watchmen - 5 of 5
3. Moon - 4.5 of 5
4. District 9 - 4.5 of 5
5. (500) Days of Summer - 4 of 5
6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - 4 of 5
7. The Hangover 4 of 5
8. Star Trek - 2 of 5

Phantom Menace has grown on me over the years since having children.
That said, I still like the last on the best. But now Phantom Mennace has replaced Attack of the clones for second place.

The problem with Menace is that it actually could have lived up to the hype. it could have been great if Lucas would have simply edited out some of the more annoying eye-roll moments. Like the two headed race announcer.
It's like Transformers 2. It's like the director looked at the finished product, thought it might be too great so he felt compelled to add in some garbage.

Also, Lucas was a little too interested in showing off hsi new technology. So JarJar got too much screen time so Lucas could show off his completely digital character, despite the jerky motions and annoying characterization.

I actually enjoyed all three films but still not nearly as much as the original trilogy. Yeah the acting wasn't the best, yes Jar Jar was annoying, but the story was actually quite good and it really did play out over 3 films since this time George knew he was going to get all three made.

All that said, I think Jar Jar could have been a good character had he been toned down a bit and given a shadier past. Like he was exiled for being a thief. Then he would be an asset during the film when they are trying to get into secure places. I bring up thief because it looked like that may have been a thought at one point since he steals the food from the shop on tatooine that gets him into the fight with Subulba. What if that turned out differently too and he was about to kill Subulba and Anikin talks him out of it? I mean Jar Jar could have been more of a Han Solo/Lando Calrisian type character.

Just a thought
