Back in March, a little less than two years after "Spider-Man 3" opened with what was then the biggest first weekend ever, Sony and Marvel Studios announced an official release date for its fourth Spidey flick: May 6, 2011. Still up in the air was the date when production would actually begin.

In an exclusive conversation with MTV News on Friday, franchise director Sam Raimi reveled that if all goes according to plan, shooting will begin early next year.

"We're hoping that it's the first week in March," said Raimi.

At the moment, pre-production is in full swing, even as screenwriter Gary Ross ("great director and a very fine writer," said Raimi) continues to work on the script.

"He's working on a draft," he continued. "I just gave him some notes and he's doing a rewrite right now."

On other fronts, "Spider-Man 4" continues to chug along. "The production is starting to come together," Raimi told us. "I've got a production designer who is starting to design the sets and the environments that the picture will take place in. We just brought aboard Scott Stokdyk as one of the two visual effects supervisors, and I worked with him on all three 'Spider-man' pictures."

With Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst set to reprise their roles, Raimi and his team will soon turn their attention to filling out the rest of the cast. "None of the casting has really taken place, but we're starting to think about that now," the director said.

Our chat with Raimi was a wide-ranging one, filled with talk about where he wants to take the Peter Parker character, which villain(s) might be showing up on the big screen, and much, much more. Check back in the coming days for more exclusive Spidey news.

So apparently Gary Ross is still writing the script but almost done I'm sure. And it seems that they know what characters from the first three are and are not returning, and they seem to have chosen what new characters and villains that will be in it.

I agree and if the main villain is a physical one they need to cast him now so the actor has time to prepare himself physically, working out, etc. Unless the main villain, along with the Lizard, is Mysterio or Electro.

Much like the plan right after SM3, look for hints towards Venom in SM4. And no, Eddie Brock (or at least Topher Grace as Eddie Brock) will not be returning. Ross was hired for Venom for one reason and one reason only. They want the same person involved with both films so the crossover is successful. The Venom spinoff will be a complete reboot of the character. Much bigger and more badasss. Possibly all CGI in Venom form. Also, look for Ross to direct SM5 and not Raimi. I'm hearing Venom will be a one shot deal making it, SM4, and SM5 basically a trilogy with Carnage being the big payoff in the end.

Awesome, so big Eddie Brock in Venom, and him in Spider-Man 5 with him and Carnage in Spider-Man 6, right? 5 and 6 will be shot back to back right? Also, I guess this means that the Lizard and Kraven are the villains in Spider-Man 4 I suppose.

I'm not making anything up. I'm just assuming it's the Lizard and Kraven in Spider-Man 4 since Infamous_Emijayne was hearing they would be the villains months ago. But everything Infamous_Emijayne is saying is true because she has a great track record.

Well, whatever happens, I still haven't heard anything to make this GOOD or BAD news yet.

I don't even know what villains are going to be in it.

This is probably going to be the most egotistical thing I've ever said in countingdown, but I think that my idea in my treatment for SM4 was the best I've seen anywhere.

Kraven vs. Lizard vs. Spider-Man. Can't go wrong.

yeah if they keep it at least two hours to develop the characters properly, if they below this time, its not going to be good

Most of what she said came from other sites reporting it first & she taken the credit as her own without even posting the link. Like IESB or Variety, for example. I even look at Variety article on what she said about the writer of Venom likely to direct Spider-Man 5 & it was listed first before she post it.

Once again your IQ proves to be lower than your shoe size...

I never claimed to be the first to announce Ross writing or directing Venom. I made calls after hearing about it online. What I found out was that they want to connect SM4 to Venom and connect Venom to SM5. Raimi will not return for SM5. He's not happy his control has been taken away again, but he'll never say anything publicly. Therefore, Ross is being given Venom and will subsequently be handed SM5 as well to keep the consistency.

Did that explain things better for you??

Even Iceman (who did work on SM3 has heard most of what I have) AND you're gonna say IESB has a better track record than me?? They may cover more movies, but who told them about who was cast in JLA?? ME... Who told them who the third villain was?? ME... Not to mention me being right about no more Singer & Routh with Superman getting a reboot. How many years did I make that claim?? You know what, you're not even worth explaining myself to...Go back to playing in your mom's basement..

Actually it says that Gary Ross, writer of Venom, is likely to direct Venom as well, not direct Spider-Man 5. Although I'm not surprised that they want Gary Ross to direct Spider-Man 5. Sam Raimi will be too busy doing Warcraft also.

dont feel bad its so hard these days to get info I didnt even hear any of this on my end lol... all i heard in the office was something about venom being a good guy and the lethal protectors storyline. I couldnt find the story on the net then rocco posted that the news came from variety then a day later its everywhere. As far as the whole venom and carnage deal I just heard that they were the villians being used for a back to back filming in vaderbuilts script which got shafted.

Right but they're revisiting the profit potential of having them in SM5. What I don't the fans will fall for is the connection they want to make between the new films. Venom is set to be a complete reboot as if he was never seen in SM3. The problem with that is in order to reboot him properly, it must be the Secret Wars storyline. That's never going to happen unless they reboot Spider-Man as well. I understand Sony / Columbia wanting to make things up to the fans but sometimes it's not worth it in the end. Sometimes, things can get worse. I'm going to reserve final opinion until after seeing what they do in SM4 to tease Venom, but don't count on the spinoff making $400mil worldwide even...

This is all new to me lol. Sounds very confusing. How can they use another venom without doing the mac gargan storyline ? Unless one of the villians is scorpion for the fourth film. As far as using another version of eddie brock thats just plain stupid and silly. If there will be indeed a new venom then it wouldnt be a spin-off it would be a remake ?

You know what, you're not even worth explaining myself to...Go back to playing in your mom's basement..

dont feel bad its so hard these days to get info I didnt even hear any of this on my end lol... all i heard in the office was something about venom being a good guy and the lethal protectors storyline.

I'm going to reserve final opinion until after seeing what they do in SM4 to tease Venom, but don't count on the spinoff making $400mil worldwide even...

ok well someone should tell rami that spider-man 4 is not evil dead 2 lol. Cant just ignore the events of spider-man 3 and redo it in part 4 because venom didnt work in spider-man 3. No one would go see that. Hell I am getting so sick and tired of these ideas that I am not even looking forward to being in spider-man 4. Unless they plan to reboot the franchise which they arent im not interested in these new ideas. They would have to hand out alot of kool aid for this to work... Bring out the lizard and kraven then reboot the series with spider-man 5 and 6 with a new venom. Too much webs in my brain to register with the other idea lol

I hear a man in suit chant coming lol

Oh ok, so then it will be Spider-Man and Venom fighting Carnage in Spider-Man 5. So what about 6? I guess that will be a new and separate story not involving the symbiotes?

Well unless another symbiote comes to earth in Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man gets the black suit again, it'll obviously be the symbiote in Dr. Connors lab.

Sorry to tell you that I don't play in my mom's basement, Emily. I already outgrew that 20 yrs. ago.

Beside, come up with an original trash talk than using that lame old Internet smack many say for years. Can you try growing up for once than using that old "you live in your mom's basement"?

But anyway, this is exciting Spider-Man 4 is getting close to being filmed. They better use the damn Lizard.
