February 12, 2002 — Due to some of the remarks that Richard Gere made during the US
Tribute concert, his new film will hurt. It also seems that all his
movies from here on out are doomed. Thanks Squirk.
Firefighters and police have united in vowing to give Richard
Gere's new movie, The Mothman Prophecies, a miss.
They don't care how good the ghost tale is (and it is rather
good, actually), they don't want to watch Gere again.
The actor, 52, is one of the most hated Hollywood celebrities
in the oh-so-patriotic U-S-of-A following his "Let's forgive" speech
after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Emergency services workers are still so angry with him that
many have sworn never to see another Gere movie, including Mothman,
which co-stars Laura Linney and Debra Messing.
A TV poll of NYPD firefighters and police came up with a 90 per
cent rejection rate. It seems they can't forgive Gere for what he
said at the US Tribute concert.
The next audience Gere intends to charm is the German
Parliament, where he will discuss human rights in the Himalayan
region. The parliament's human rights committee invited the devoted
Buddhist for a hearing on April 17 because of his extensive knowledge
of Tibet.
