rbankc said: Who was Nero?
Nero Claudius Cfsar Augustus Germanicus (December 15, 37 ADJune 9, 68 AD) was the fifth and last Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty (5054). He was and is widely believed to have been genuinely insane. He killed his own mother. On the night July 18 to July 19, 64 the Great fire of Rome erupted. It was said that Nero viewed the fire from the tower of Maecenas, and exulting, as Nero said, "with the beauty of the flames," he sang the whole time the "Sack of Ilium," in his regular stage costume. The confused population searched for a scapegoat and soon rumors held Nero responsible. Nero had to engage in scapegoating of his own and chose for his target a small Eastern sect called Christians. He ordered known Christians to be thrown to the lions in arenas, while others were crucified in large numbers. Besides being put to death they were made to serve as objects of amusement; they were clothed in the hides of beasts and torn to death by dogs; others were crucified, others set on fire to serve to illuminate the night when daylight failed. Nero personally ordered the crucifixion of Saint Peter and, later, the beheading of Paul of Tarsus. In 66, though Nero doted on Poppaea, he reportedly kicked her to death while she was pregnant and ill, because she complained that he came home late from the races. The Senate deposed Nero, who committed suicide on June 9, 68. It is said that he uttered these last words before stabbing himself in the neck: "Qualis artifex pereo; What an artist dies in me!"
