Yeah this is hardly surprising. Its the xmas holidays, parents take their kids to see films with fluffy animals and strong moral messages about friendships, not films with razor bladed whips and pregnant women being slaughtered.

Alvin and the Chipmunks decided to try something that AVP2 didn't. It's called not sucking.
Go figure.

Yeah, honestly I really really really liked Alvin and the Chipmunks. That may be because I grew up on them, but either way I thought it was an awesome movie. Probably the best movie of the year and one of the better movies of the year in general. I would definitely rate it among the top 10.

PS I'm not gay...just thought I'd throw that out there.

Alvin and the Chipmunks was the surprise of the year for me. It was a really fun film. Percentage-wise (not dollars), it stands a chance at being one of the most profitable of the year.

AvP-R should have waited for when there was less competition or have come out earlier.

LOL i agree. Even though i didnt see Alvin yet, i though AVPR was missing alot. Also with so many good reviews and things to say about the movie from other people, no wnder it beat AVPR.

PS. AVPR opening during Christmas holidays, was probably the stupidest move fox did ("hint" look at a Black Christmas)

I agree, if AVP-R had come out any time that wasn't christmas, where a lot of parents will be on the lookout for family orientated movies, chances are it would have made more money opening.

Not surprising.

I haven't seen AVP2, even though I still want to, but I have seen Alvin and the Chipmunks.

It's a VERY well-done film with original gags and humor. I've heard that AVP2 wasn't much better than the first one. That, coupled with the fact that it's the Christmas season (which would have more kids at the movies), makes AATC far more likely to succeed.

I grew up with Alvin. Hated it ever since. I hated Alvin with a passion. Knowing this is no suprise to me when there are kids, where the parents will be forced to see it more then once. Really AVPR will probly get better around...now ha. Sometime after christmas. Still when the DVD comes out, ppl are gonna buy it no matter what. I didn't see Alvin yet and don't want to. I hate them more then Batman and Robin. Thats pretty bad. I don't even want to take a chance. Maybe when the DVD comes out tho. I have my top 3 fav movies of the yeahr

1. Aliens Vs Predator Requiem
2. Sweeney Todd
3. Transformers

Alvin and the Chipmunks:
  1. Came out a week and a half before Christmas.
  2. Was rated PG so basically everyone can watch and enjoy it.
  3. Was a successful movie.
Alien vs. Predator - Requiem
  1. Came out on Christmas Day which was a horrible move.
  2. Was rated R so that limits out all the kids and holiday lovers.
  3. Wasn't that successful on many reasons.

He doesn't have to admit that the movie is bad if he doesn't think it is. I for one thought it was a great movie. I think marketing may have been just as big a problem with it as its release date. I remember when my friend and I were sitting down watching the first one on FX and he asks me "I wonder if they're gonna make another one." I couldn't believe it. I said "Um, they did. It's in theaters right now." I guess I can't really blame him, though. I've seen hardly any previews for it at all. Anyway, these results are not surprising, but are disappointing. If anything, it's a lesson in marketing.

Yea k my bad. It was an OK movie but it had alot of problems.

Yea the marketing was really bad. All the trailers that i seen for it on TV had the "Silent Night" christmas theme to it, and i remember when we were walking the hockey game, everyone was like "WTF bad trailer". Only half of us ended up seeing that film.

PS. Maybe its time for this board to actually have a picture above that time clock. Just a thought CD, its not that hard. Oh and maybe change those trailers on the front page too (Wouldnt hurt now would it?)

I'm truly surprised that they didn't, at some point in the film, have the Chipmunks sing the theme song from the '80s cartoon. It's one of their best original songs, and I'm sure they could have worked it in there somewhere.

Maybe in the sequel, which with how well this one is doing, will no doubt happen.

Well I have not seen AvP-R yet because it is not released until 18th January over here. I'm trying to get all my friends to go see it, mainly because I think it will do pretty bad over here in Britain. Although, I was suprised that it didn't do so well in the US. But I suppose that is mainly due to the stupid release date.

I will agree that the marketing of AVP2 was just horrible. From the release date to the lack of publicity leading up to the release to the lack of an internet campaign. It just seems like the studio made the films, wasn't happy with the results but were contractually obligated to put it out there so they just dumped it and ran.
There are several easy things they could have done to boost interest, from comic tie ins to presentations at Comic Con and other conventions to simple internet grass roots campaings like has been done with X-Men and Dark Knight. It isn't hard to create a buzz.

Alvin and The Chipmunks was both entertaining and funny and worth the amount of money you pay to see the film. I'll wait till AVP comes on Starz or something.
