nstinct-for-c2

It probably goes without saying - not that it won't still bring tears to the eyes of those with a penchant for ice-picking yielding ****-magnets - but the once-promising "Basic Instinct" franchise is as dead as a sun-touched ant. That's according to producer Mario Kassar who told me earlier this week that plans for a third chapter were shelved when the sequel, "Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction", failed to make any kind of impression at the box office (let alone an audience).

In 2006, star Sharon Stone told reporters that she'd read the script for a potential "Basic Instinct 3". She also revealed she'd be directing the pic (did C2 know about this!?). "There's a script for the next part of the story - but I would like to direct it rather than star in it. It will be filmed in the UK again as the setting is more intense and gritty."

More intense and gritty? Is that what that was in "Basic Instinct 2"? Did I miss that part in between my slumber?

Sounds like C2 have done as a favour by pressing the 'stop' button on the Catherine Tramell express. But in all seriousness, the first film was such a cheesy, but enjoyable thriller - it had a little bit of everything. And Sharon Stone did rock that boat! It was a classy pic with, I would've thought, much franchise potential. Pity about that little stumble some 14 years later.

Kassar, who was the executive producer on Paul Verhoeven's original hit and later, executive producer on Michael Caton-Jones' sequel, also confirmed that plans for a direct-to-video sequel to "Showgirls", originally announced in 2005, "never happened" either.

"Showgirls 2" was said to have a financial backer in Germanys Lighthouse Films and producers in Brad Krevoy and Donald Kushner, but signatures never hit paper.

Kassar's (who, I might mention, is a terrific guy - and, if I do say myself, a great producer) currently working on the bonking-less "Terminator Salvation", released in a couple of months.
