thats for all who said Pirates would beat Spidey 3..

i tried to tell you all but people don't listen.. just becasue you hate the movie so much doesn't mean everyone else does or will..Now granted POTC3 is a great movie no doubt, i was just posting this, becasue everyone was posting braggin on how well this movie was gonna do finanically than Spidey 3...just goes to show you cannot predict the box office.. hell like Emi said Pirates even had a whole 800 more screens...

but take in account that Drive-ins are playing both Spidey 3, and Pirates, thus rotating Shrek 3, so those movie are sharing that money too..

Least it did beat X-3 though...

Latest "Pirates" underperforms previous film
Sunday May 27 12:56 PM ET

Johnny Depp sailed to glory at the North American box office on Sunday with his latest "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, but the family adventure failed to match the performance of its predecessor last year.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" sold an estimated $126.5 million worth of tickets during the Friday-to-Sunday portion of the U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend, distributor Walt Disney Co. said on Sunday.

The three-day tally compares with the $151 million record set four weekends ago by "Spider-Man 3," erasing the old mark of $135.6 million established last year by the second film in the "Pirates" franchise, "Dead Man's Chest."

The tally for the latest "Pirates" film includes sales from Thursday-evening previews. Disney declined to detail that sum Sunday, but earlier in the weekend, it had provided an estimate of $14 million.

"Pirates" did, however, break the four-day (Friday-Monday) Memorial Day record with a day to spare. The old mark of $123 million was set last year by "X-Men: The Last Stand."

Internationally, "Pirates" earned $176.7 million from 102 markets, Disney said.

Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Marketing and Distribution, said he was "not a bit" disappointed by the North American tally, given the tough competition.

Depp returns, as Captain Jack Sparrow, as do co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, on whom Depp modeled his slurring, boozy character, makes a cameo as Sparrow's father. All three films were directed by Gore Verbinski.

Critics were largely unenthused by the latest film, but their words of warning are often ignored when it comes to big-budget popcorn extravaganzas.

Meanwhile, incumbent North American champ "Shrek the Third" slipped to No. 2 with $51 million, a week after opening to $122 million. Its 10-day haul rose to $201 million. The animated comedy was produced by DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. and released by Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures.

"Spider-Man 3" followed at No. 3 with $13.7 million in its fourth weekend. Its total stands at $303.3 million. The superhero franchise was released by Columbia Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp .

Yes it appears I was wrong, but talk to me again when both have finished their theatrical run.

Also take these into account.

1. SM3 was released with ZERO competition yet POTC3 is contending with SM3 and Shrek the Third, but still managed to come very close to matching SM3's box office debut.

2. I was unaware POTC3 was nearly 45 minutes longer than SM3 limiting its' views per day making the additional 800 screens a non-factor and placing in dangerous waters (no pun intended) much like King Kong.

.

now see, i said that but nobody listened to me.. .and what happened? Shrek took 51 million of what could have easily been split between Spidey and Pirates, or all went to Pirates....

Next week Shrek will prob also drop to around 20 million range as Spidey dropped to 13.7, while Pirates drops to the 50 range, cause all movie thus far have been droppin huge, thats just how it goes...

Hehe. I love seeing that animation.

Spidey KNEW it wouldn't be able to get it in the long run this year. With so many movies coming out, it would be SO unlikely to break records like that, for ANY movie really.

I'm just glad that I was right and Spidey still holds the US opening weekend.

Given that POTC3 opened less, I'm not sure if it can beat Spidy 3 in the long run if it continues this way. It doesn't look like it will match DMC, that's for sure.

Which do I think will most likely win? Pirates, it has plenty of fangirls to keep it busy at the box office going on a daily basis just like the film's predecessor.

Opening weekend doesn't set a tone for what it'll achieve. Pirates 1 did not do amazing opening weekend but it grew. Spidey 3 did... and it fell.

And last time I checked -
"Disney's "Pirates" Rule The Global Box Office with Biggest Opening of All Time; Film's Unprecedented Booty of $401 Million is a New Industry Record!"

I think that settles that, "This figure surpasses the previous record of $382 million set by the six day opening of "Spiderman 3" earlier this year."

$401 million is not the worldwide opening...$401 million is Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, And Monday. The WW opening for POTC3 is $334 million, and SM3's WW opening weekend is $381 million.

Never said it was the World Wide Opening because it hasn't even opened World Wide yet. And yet even starting out as an underperformer it's now making the money faster then SM3 and breaking the bigger records.

Honestly i think Shrek 3 would have benefited more from the Holiday opening weekend... and be were Pirates is now..

Still the Best movie of this year so far i think is still 300

Well I'm officially confused. Which link should I believe? One's saying it's over 400 million, and the other's saying 334 million. So which is more accurate? Who's right?

Box Office Mojo isn't calculating the most recent estimates from the studio which only appeared online this afternoon.

And Shrek 3 would not have benefited the way Pirates did as Shrek 3 is actually getting a bit more nasty reviews but yes, it could have done slightly better if Pirates hadn't happened.

man looking through this thread makes me realize something.......people get awfully defensive when it comes to competetion and after watching all the big movies, shrek was the only one that sucked, hehe. cant wait for 2009's battle of big movies lol im on TF2 team . oh and btw SM3 won please dont fight over that last bit that i said.

i also have something to say, i hope emi reads this and gives it a shot, if u were dissapointed with SM3, watch all 3 spider-man films one after the other, and SM3 doesnt seem so bad, yes i was a little dissapointed even tho i liked it, except how venom was handled, i think there was too much anticipation for the film, so give it another shot, cant say the same about pirates because i liked part 3 because part 2 lowered my expectations and i ended up liking it lol
