Paramount Pictures will distribute a slate of feature films to be produced by Marvel Studios, including the big screen adaptation of the 'James Bond'/'Man From U.N.C.L.E.' -inspired Marvel comic book character Nick Fury: Agent Of S.H.I.E.L.D..
"We are excited to be building our own film slate ..." said Avi Arad, Chairman and CEO, Marvel Studios.
"Paramount Pictures (the home of Star Trek and Indiana Jones) has the most collaborative and creative team in the business to help us market our films ..."
"Marvel has become a marquee entertainment brand," said Brad "Sopranos" Grey, newly installed Chairman/CEO of Paramount Pictures.
Marvel has obtained a financing commitment from Merrill Lynch Commercial Finance Corp. for a $525 million non-recourse revolving credit facility over seven years. The facility will be secured by theatrical/motion picture rights to 10 Marvel characters.
Marvel expects that producing its own slate of films will permit it to obtain greater participation in all revenue streams related to its films.
The finance structure will also allow Marvel to receive a producer fee for each film and retain all merchandising revenues.
Paramount will receive a distribution fee for each film it distributes and will retain worldwide distribution rights in sequels to the films covered under the agreement.
The distribution agreement specifies Marvel may deliver up to ten films to Paramount over an eight-year period, with the first titles including Nick Fury and Captain America.
Marvel's budgets for each film may range between $45 million to $180 million.
The first picture is expected to be released in 2007-008, with Paramount providing advance funding of promotion/advertising.
The character of 'Nicholas Joseph Fury', the eldest of three children, was born in New York City, to an American pilot who died in battle during World War I.
Growing up in 'Hell's Kitchen', Fury enlisted in the Army and became a Sergeant, leading the 'Howling Commandos' soldiers on missions inside Europe during World War II.
Fury continued to remain on active duty throughout the Korean War, then spied for the French in Viet Nam during the 1950s, earning the rank of colonel and full-time appointment to government Intelligence.
Becoming director of international-espionage organization 'S.H.I.E.L.D.', Fury is currently an undercover field operative.
He is noted as a skilled paratrooper, Ranger, demolitions expert and vehicle specialist, also holding a commander's all-seas license.
Fury also completed both Green and Black Beret Special Forces training, has been an agent of 'OSS' (Office of Special Services) and liaison to 'M5' (British Secret Intelligence).
He was a heavyweight boxer in the Army, holds a black belt in Tae Kwan Do and brown belt in Jiu Jitsu.
To maintain his pace, Fury must ingest the 'Infinity Formula', which slows down the ageing process of his body. The Gambler X-Stud
