I just saw this film last night with a few friends of mine. Although we had a few different films that we were interested in seeing, this film won out with all of us. However, what we expected was not what we were met with.
First of all, this is a beautiful film. From the landscapes to certain camera angles, this was a beautifully shot film. However, it was the way that this film was shot that I have a problem with. I couldn't believe how a movie could be filmed so beautifully, yet so badly at the same time.
For more than half the film (if not the entire film) the camera was always shaky or unsteady or constantly moving. From the quick unfocused panning shots to the annoying transitions from darkness to brightness, and especially in the battle scenes, the quick and nauseating edits with the camera moving through the fields. One of my friends and I literally became sick watching this film. I had to keep closing my eyes. And at two and half hours long I was just counting the minutes until it would be over.
I'm sure I would have enjoyed the film alot more if I was watching it at home. So take my advice if you are like me and can't handle fast paced editing and some of the other conditions I mentioned, then wait until it comes out on DVD. I think watching it on a smaller screen would be easier to handle than spending however much it is these days to watch a film in a big theater just to end up feeling nauseated by the end.
Otherwise, the story was fine, but didn't really add anything to the Pochontas tale that most people don't already know. The lack of dialogue may also interest or disappoint some people. About half of the dialogue is spoken as voice-overs from the main characters' points of view.
Out of the five of us who went, three were utterly disappointed while two (including myself) didn't know what to make of it or exactly how we felt about it. Though I'm willing to give it another try when it comes out on DVD. I hope that this post will be helpful to others.
