I have seen some of the projections for the success of the new POSEIDON. Some are okay; some are not so okay. I think the experts are forgetting something, though.
The original Poseidon Adventure had a HUGE FOLLOWING in 1972. For those of us who were in our teens during the early 70's, it was the first huge specials effect movie most of us had ever seen. When the movie was shown on TV the first time, back in 1974, it was the 6th highest television event in the history of television, for the time. It has also been re-run several times since, and has huge exposure.
The movie was also so successful that it spawned dozens of big blockbuster disaster films.
When TITANIC came out, many of us who grew up with POSEIDON said to ourselves,"I wonder what today's new technology could have done with POSEIDON?"
Now many millions are getting our wish. This film, which had such an enormous following, is basicaly being updated with today's technology.
A lot more people are going to go out and see this film than the experts think, IMO.
A few years, ago CBS ran a "Carol Burnett Special". It was not expected to do that weill, but to the surprise of the industry it was the number 1 show of the week, because people who grew up watching that show in the 70's eagerly turned in to watch.
After Lucille Ball died (17 years ago today to be exact), CBS showed a lost pilot episode, which was the number 1 show of the week. Nobody expected that from a show that was over 40 years ago.
What I am trying to say is that obessession with the original POSEIDON ADVENTURE is deep, and there will be a LOT of FANS who come out to see this reinvisioning.
Perhaps the critics themselves are under 40 years of age, and don't realize the impact this film had on those over 45 or so.
